Recap / Law And Order S 22 E 7 Only The Lonely

Go To

Price and Maroun must contend with a charming Con Man who chooses to represent himself after being arrested for brutally murdering a woman he allegedly scammed out of half a million dollars.

  • 555: Dana Clarkson, the Victim of the Week, had a business card containing 2 numbers with 555 in the middle, 646 and 212, an overlay and the original area codes, respectively, of Manhattan.
  • Con Man: Miller makes his living by romancing affluent women and then either conning them into giving him money or just stealing their bank information. Nolan even calls him "a con man and a cold-blooded killer."
  • A Fool for a Client: Miller fires his attorney, deciding to represent himself and proves very formidable, despite having been expelled from Columbia for cheating. He manages to get a damning tape into evidence, and Detective Shaw's testimony excluded.
  • Hollywood Law: The judge ignores procedure and the basic rules of evidence in Miller's favor because "pro se defendants get more latitude". If pro se defendants got that much latitude a person would have to be stupid to not represent themselves.
  • Hypocrite: Grace Pollard made a name for herself as a champion of women, but was willing to lie about attorney-client privilege to avoid testifying against a man who victimized dozens of women and killed one of them just to avoid personal embarassment.
  • I Have Many Names: Devon Miller is the perp's real name, but he has 8 different passports and birthdays.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Though we don't see it, Dr. Royce, Dana's ex-boyfriend, tells the detectives that she was this. She called him out of the blue asking for money, something she had never done before despite making upwards of $500,000 a year. Her financial records prove this, with her being $200,000 in credit card debt, courtesy of Devon.
  • Pyrrhic Victory: Miller gets convicted, but Grace Pollard's reputation as a pioneer woman is obliterated, with Miller having a sex tape of the two of them shown to the public.
  • Ship Tease: At the end of the episode, Price asks Maroun if she wants to go out for drinks; she declines because she has a date. Though he tells her to have fun (though cautioning her to making sure that her date only has one passport), the disappointed look on his face definitely says otherwise.
  • Shout-Out: Detective Shaw compares Miller to James Bond with the many passports he has.
