As Shining Glory teaches Lady and the maidens about magic, Maiden Curlycrown is bitten by a Chromadid spider, which will put her into an endless sleep unless the others can find a snow rose. They only grow in the upper valleys of the Frosted Mountains, and Ravenwaves and Hairball plan to get there first and hold the roses for the kingdom's ransom. Shining Glory wishes Lady luck, but she runs into trouble when the Comb Gnomes use tangling vines to trap her and Maiden Fairhair. Lady realizes that they'll only attack if they struggle, so by not moving, they're freed and are able to move on.
As both groups reach the mountains, Hairball traps Lady and Fairhair in an igloo, but the Pixietails free them just in time for Ravenwaves to arrive and snatch the roses. However, the owner of the roses, an ice giant, is angry. Lady apologizes for Ravenwaves and explains about Curlycrown, and the guardian lets her take the roses. When Ravenwaves refuses to give them to her even after Lady spoke up for her, she and Hairball are forced to run from the guardian's pack of wolves. Lady returns home without incident, and Maiden Curlycrown is saved. The guardian of ice gives Lady a crystal she can use to contact him as needed. Meanwhile, Ravenwaves and Hairball have caught a cold from the snow.
