Recap / Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts: S1 E06: "Ratland"

Go To

The wolves break the news to Scarlemagne as Kipo tries to crack her father’s code. Then Benson gives the burrow girl a 13th birthday surprise — or two.

Tropes:

  • A Birthday, Not a Break: Kipo turns 13, but not only she is attacked by Scarlemagne's mooks, she also learns that she is part-Mute, when fur growns and goes away on her right arm.
  • Blindfolded Trip: When the Billion brothers are taken to Scarlemagne’s palace, they have bags placed over their heads.
  • Elephants Never Forget: An elephant mute at Ratland constantly reminds everyone that he has total access to the rides because he is an annual pass holder.
  • Girls Stare at Scenery, Boys Stare at Girls: Inverted. While Benson looks up at the night sky on the ferris wheel, Kipo is the one who stares at Benson.
  • Gratuitous French: The rats like peppering their speech with badly mispronounced French and Spanish.
  • Expy: The rats are extremely friendly, run an amusement park, and act as its mascot, in a clear take on Disney World.
  • Mustache Vandalism: A mural in the store Kipo and Benson pass through has graffiti sprayed over a family of people. The dad in it has a crude mustache sprayed on him.
  • Incompatible Orientation: Kipo states that she likes Benson... to which Benson has to stumble around before he just openly states that he's gay. Kipo does feel slightly awkward about it, but she accepts it and is glad the two are friends.
  • The Reveal: Three in fact.
    • Benson reveals that he's gay.
    • Both Benson and Kipo learn that the latter is part-Mute.
    • It's revealed Scarlemagne is collecting humans so he can form an army.
  • So Unfunny, It's Funny: Kipo thinks the rats tell some pretty cheesy jokes, but she ends up laughing at them anyways.
  • Unseen No More: After being mentioned numerous times, Scarlemagne finally makes his debut.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Though she can't speak, Mandu gets the message across to Wolf by growling that she is not pleased that Wolf is keeping the clue to her family's whereabouts hidden from Kipo. Wolf brushes her off.
  • Wham Episode: The episode establishes that Kipo isn't fully human and that the Big Bad is trying to amass an army of enslaved humans.

Scarlemange

Introduced playing the piano in a hysterical passion, wiping his sweat into a jar, while commanding his court to dance with a flick of a finger. The power and fear he obsessively commands is made all too clear.
