The episode begins among the ruins of a large city, as a large waves bursts out of a sewer tunnel and dumps out a young girl, Kipo. She tries to make her way back through to the "burrow city" that she cam from, but the way has been completely blocked with fallen rubble. Despondent, she wanders into the ruins to find replacements for her sodden clothes and to try to get her bearing; this doesn't prove very fruitful, as she was terribly turned around during the flood and can't remember where her original home is. As she tries to navigate the bizarre sights and sounds of the monster-infested surface, she befriends a four-eyed, six-legged pig, which she names Mandu, and narrowly avoids a gigantic rabbit monster after trying to play with its young. She then runs into Wolf, a surly, even younger girl out on her own when the latter attempts to capture and eat Mandu.

Kipo decides to follow Wolf around while searching for her home, much to Wolf's chagrin as Kipo has a lot to learn about surviving the dangers of the post-apocalyptic world. Eventually, however, Kipo manages to get Wolf to agree to help her get home, with the understanding that the two will part ways afterwards. The next day, the three set off but are ambushed by a gang of suit-wearing mutant frogs, but gain themselves some time when Wolf downs their leader with the soporific venom of her stinger-tipped staff. Kipo, Wolf, and Mandu take shelter in a ruined house, but find themselves in an uncomfortable situation when they discover a crying baby somehow in there — and the frogs, who just reached the house, hear it too, and are closing in...

Tropes:

  • Blinded by the Sun: When Kipo looks up at the sky, the sun and it’s overwhelming heat immediately hurt her eyes due to living underground for most of her life. She even covers her eyes and flails around before peaking through her hands and realizing she is not blind.
  • Bunnies for Cuteness: The giant Mega Bunnies have multiple rows of ears and many legs, but the young are still just as adorable as any bunny. Kipo finds them utterly adorable.
  • Cliffhanger: The episode ends with Kipo, Wolf, and Mandu cornered inside a house alongside a crying baby, as the latter's cries risk alerting the Mutes hunting for them.
  • Costume-Test Montage: After her existing clothes get torn and waterlogged, Kipo tries on different outfits until she finds a new and clean one she likes.
  • Down L.A. Drain: Kipo washed up in this area when she bursts out of a sewer drain.
  • Dynamic Entry: Kipo notices a long tongue springing towards her and Wolf which they narrowly avoid. That tongue is connected to a Mod Frog named Jamack.
  • Establishing Character Moment: You can tell by Kipo's reaction that's while she's shocked, she's ultimately fascinated with the surface world and wants to bond with those who dwell upon it.
  • First Time in the Sun: Kipo does not have a good first time experience with it, rolling around in agony for a few seconds.
  • Giant Spider: Kipo briefly gets stuck in a web with a dog-sized spider sitting in it. Fortunately for her, Wolf snatches her from the web in time.
  • Indestructible Edible: Kipo breaks into a pre-apocalypse vending machine that still has edible bags of chips in it. Subverted when she later comes across a carton of milk that's 200 years past its' expiration date.
  • Queer Colors: One of the outfits Kipo tries on is a ball gown coloured like the bisexual pride flag.
  • Stargazing Scene: Kipo looks up at the night sky and talks all about the stars adorning it. Wolf (who’s trying to sleep), immediately grows annoyed of this.
  • Touch of Death: Wolf stops Kipo from walking into a bush of Death Ivy, plants that are capable of killing any living thing with a single touch. A few animals corpses can be seen near the bushes, and a butterfly mute that lands on it instantly dies.
  • Towering Flower: Kipo's first exposure to the weirdness of the surface is a store overgrown by immense flowers with blooms larger than herself.
  • Way Past the Expiration Date: While searching through the abandoned convenience store, Kipo finds a carton of milk that is dated to expire on Oct. 23, 2020. Since it is 2220, the milk has expired 200 years ago. The milk even shatters into pieces when Kipo drops it.
