Recap / King Of The Hill S 9 E 5 Dale To The Chief

Go To

Dale changes his country-hating, right-wing mania into insufferable, flag-waving patriotism after reading over the Warren Commission and discovering that the U.S. is right about who shot John F. Kennedy. Meanwhile, Hank must go through a boatload of red tape in order to fix an embarrassing mistake on his renewed driver's license.

Tropes:

  • Beware the Silly Ones: Dale proves to be a force to be reckoned with when he manages to scare a bureaucrat at the DMV to change Hank’s license without the need of the various trivial aspects that would require him to do so.
  • Catch-22 Dilemma: Dale is faced with one of these about the government at the end of the episode. Despite his newfound patriotism, he realizes it was a big mistake on their part to mislabel Hank's gender. On the other hand though, if they were right about him being female then they gave into his threats pretty easily. Even Hank admits that it is quite the paradox, and Dale says he needs to do some thinking, implying this is what returns him to his usual self by the next episode.
  • If Jesus, Then Aliens: Dale undergoes this line of thinking thanks to misunderstanding the direction Kennedy's car was travelling before the assassination this entire time, and when he realizes his mistake, the entire scenario now makes perfect sense to him and he becomes convinced that the government has been right about everything else as well all along, turning him into an obsessive patriot instead.
  • Obstructive Bureaucrat: Hank goes through a bunch of these just to have the sex on his new driver’s license changed.
  • Screw the Rules, I Have Connections!: A variant. Dale threatens to get the president involved if the DMV guy doesn’t change Hank’s license with no strings attached.
