Tropes found in this episode:

  • Apathetic Teacher: Principal Moss is willing to ignore Joseph and Lori making out, if only to avoid actually having to do paperwork, until Emily decides to call it in.
  • The Birds and the Bees: Dale tries to give one version of this to Joseph, but gives up when he realizes Joseph is too old for it. Joseph only listens to Dale when Dale says that while Joseph knows about sex, he only knows about the physical side of it, not the emotional side, and as he's too unprepared, he should wait.
  • Breaking the Fourth Wall: After Dale says that he will get out of the asylum sooner than later due to budget cuts re-defining what constitutes insanity, he turns to the camera and says "Guess who squeaked by?"
  • Frustrating Lie: When Bobby tries to cover for Joseph when he's caught making out in the janitor's closet with his girlfriend and lies by saying Joseph was just selling drugs, not only does Hank not believe him, but he admonishes him for telling such an awful lie. Currently provides the page quote.
  • Lets Wait Awhile: Despite his perverted behavior, Joseph is uncomfortable having sex with Lori, and his refusal causes her to dump him.
  • Obstructive Bureaucrat: Mike Patel follows the word of the manual to a T, as he refuses to let Dale to leave without filling out massive amounts of paperwork, or let him leave after he assaults a guard in trying to escape. Even if he is at the asylum of his own free will.
  • Parental Neglect: Nancy doesn't do anything to help Joseph because she's too busy trying to one up Miguel at the anchor desk.
  • Troubling Unchildlike Behavior: Lori wants to have sex with Joseph despite them only being thirteen. When he later refuses, she offers to let him go "halfway" and when he refuses that too, she dumps him.
