Recap / King Of The Hill S 13 E 12 Uncool Customer

Go To

Peggy and Bobby try to befriend a "cool" mother and daughter. Meanwhile, Hank tries to eat at a communal restaurant.

Tropes:

  • Awesome McCoolname: Katt and Michael Savage. These are only their trendy new names. Katt's real name is Barb Davis.
  • Be Yourself: Peggy spends the episode wishing she could be cooler and more in touch with current trends, she tries kissing up to Katt because she's the kind of mother she wants to be and hopes to emulate her. But after witnessing the Room Full of Crazy Katt needs to keep up with the ever changing nature of current trends and having her explain the amount of time and effort she puts into it Katt admits she'd rather just act like a woman her own age like Peggy.
  • Call-Back: Earlier in the episode, we see Bobby and Peggy shopping for the latest trendy vacuum cleaner. We later see Katt has several different vacuums in her Room Full of Crazy, hardly used.
  • Failed a Spot Check: After getting invited to Michael's party, Peggy and Bobby think they have to act and dress "cool" like Katt and Michael, even though they met Michael and her mother while taking cotillion lessons, which was why she was taking them to begin with: as expected, the party is cotillion-themed and when they arrive, everyone stares at them, the pony Michael entered on is spooked by everyone yelling at them and throws her off, causing her to hit a table and get a punch bowl dumped on top of her.
  • Gender-Blender Name: Michael is Katt's daughter, to Peggy's initial confusion. Despite her potentially Tomboyish Name, Michael is firmly a Girly Girl.
  • Kitschy Themed Restaurant: The Arlen Barn sells great food, but the problem is that it's communal dining and you sit wherever there's an open spot, and Hank hates the idea of having to sit together with a bunch of strangers. As he puts it, the table smells like a diaper thanks to the baby fussing on the table next to him, but it's still the best meal he's had in years. He tries to solve the problem first by inviting his friends with him so that they'll have a table all to themselves, but an old lady in a wheelchair joins them and Bill starts a conversation with her, and when he tries to later order his food to go, he's still forced to sit at the packed table until they finish his order. Ultimately, he ends up paying Octavio to order his food and deliver it to him, but Octavio has already taken a bite of his sandwich before giving it to Hank, claiming that's how it was when he got it.
  • Spoiled Brat: Michael, who also seems to be a bit of an Alpha Bitch, given with how she orders all her other girlfriends to confiscate any phones that may have footage of her embarrassing party mishap.
  • Stealth Insult: Sort of. After inviting Peggy to a bar, Katt reacts to Peggy's enthusiasm with "You're fun. You say what you think, like you're already drunk." After the reveal of Katt's stressful trend-chasing, she may actually admire Peggy's ability to be herself without being beholden to what's cool.
  • The Unreveal: It's never revealed if considering Katt's real name is Barb Davis if Michael is her real name, or a hip, cool name she chose to seem trendy.
