Recap / Kill la Kill Ep 16 The Girl Can't Help It

Go To

Though Satsuki managed to complete her takeover, Nudist Beach still remains active which their leader, Mikisugi, decides to explain everything to Ryuko. At the same time, Satsuki recovers from the battle and her mother, Ragyō Kiryūin, show her the true nature of her family's legacy.

Tropes in this episode include:

  • Alien Invasion: What everything ultimately boils down to in the long run. The Life Fibers are alien lifeforms that plan on assimilating the humans who wear the clothes they're sewn into.
  • Bait-and-Switch: After Aikuro asks Mako if she has the resolve to join him, she declines... because she's not interested in being an exhibitionist. She is, however, willing to join because Ryuko is her friend.
  • Bathos: Just as Ryuko faces off against a trigger happy Tsumugu, Mako tries to eat her snacks but is horrified to find that they taste soggy.
  • Been There, Shaped History: The Life Fibers species have been present in the evolution of mankind and have played a part in silently advancing their intelligence over the course of history.
  • Cliffhanger: The episode ends with Ryuko and Tsumugu getting ready to brawl at each other while Mako complains about her ruined snacks.
  • Freudian Excuse: It turns out that Ragyo's been sexually abusing Satsuki, possibly since childhood, and that this is one of the myriad of reasons for her harshness and detachment towards people.
  • Halfway Plot Switch: The show casts off its oppressive school plot and switches to an Alien Invasion story.
  • Irony: Mako is normally shown asleep during Aikuro's history lessons at school. Only now she's wide awake when he's explaining the history of Life Fibers.
  • Literal-Minded: After Aikuro explains that Ryuko's father founded Nudist Beach, Mako imagines the old man in an actual beach alongside various babes.
  • Not Quite Dead: Turns out Nudist Beach managed to retreat into a second bunker underneath their initial one. They're still active and kicking.
  • Parental Incest: One of the first acts of villainy Ragyo performs on screen is molesting her daughter in the bath, and it is implied she has been doing this for years.
  • Recap Episode: Parodied. It starts out like one but Senketsu goes all Motor Mouth and crams 15 episodes of recap into 2 minutes.
  • Refusal of the Call: Ryuko and Senketsu are called to help Nudist Beach's rebellion against the Life Fibers, but Ryuko refuses on Senketsu's behalf.
  • Shout-Out: Mako takes the form of a Xenomorph during her Hallelujah moment.
  • Strange Minds Think Alike: Discussed. Ryuko quickly shifts down Mako's idea on what Nudist Beach really is and laments to Senketsu how she's become attuned to knowing how Mako thinks.
  • Tomato in the Mirror: Everyone, especially Senketsu, is surprised to learn that he's actually of alien origin.
  • We ARE Struggling Together: After Ryuko declares that she won't make Senketsu fight his own kind, Tsumugu decides to terminate him on the spot if he won't be of use to their cause and will gladly beat up a high school girl just to do so.
  • Wham Episode: With regards to both the Kiryuin family and the nature of the plot itself. Ragyo is a paedophilic creep who is partly responsible for Satsuki's villainous nature. The Life Fibers that have been prevalent since the beginning of the story are aliens and have been with humanity since the stone age, enhancing their intelligence through clothing so they may be ready to absorb them. We find out the Kiryuin family's real end goal. To help a parasitic alien life form called the Primordial Life Fibers take over the world.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: After learning about Life Fibers and Senketsu's connection to them, Ryuko lays into Mikisugi and Kinagase for viewing Sekentsu as nothing but a weapon they can use to destroy his own kind.

Kill La Kill's Recap Episode

Hilariously Subverted. While at first, it seems to play this trope straight, it almost immediately rushes the summary of the series, up to that point.

How well does it match the trope?
