Setchan: Previously on… Zenkaiger!
Zocks was baited into fighting Kaito as part of a Tozitend scheme!
But everyone worked together and showed them who's boss!
Here's hoping things stay peaceful for a while, now.

It's a throwback episode! Under the influence of Retro Wald, everyone undergoes an extreme blast from the past. As the team tries to figure out what's going on in this newly retro society, Yatsude meets a boy named Ryo, taking him on the greatest retro adventure!

Tropes

  • '80s Hair: Kaito sports a long, fluffy hairdo that is plucked straight out of the mid-80s.
  • Aspect Ratio Switch: When Retro Wald releases his Nostalgia Wave plague, the aspect ratio changes from 16:9 to 4:3 along with an added sepia filter. Even the audio sounds more muffled like in some of the earlier Sentai seasons. When the Kikainoid Zenkaigers realise they have nothing to feel nostalgic over, they wake from the spell with the colors returning, while Juran and Gaon push the aspect ratio back to 16:9.
  • Breather Episode: This episode is a return to form to Zenkaiger's usual wacky antics (aside from some somber moments in the middle), taking the focus off the Goldtsuikers after the previous seven episodes heavily focused on their backstory and getting them to work together with the Zenkaigers.
  • Call-Back: Once again with only four active members on the team during their decisive conflict against Retro Wald, the Zenkaigers re-enacted the same human-train style rolecall they did back in episode 3.
  • Failed a Spot Check: Zocks doesn't notice that his Geardailinger was changed after he was reverted out of suit, only noticing after he goes through his entire transformation dance with no music or sound effects.
    Juran: Now he noticed.
  • Mythology Gag: Retro Wald does an introductive narration of himself in the style of Mahou Sentai Magiranger's opening narration.
Retro. Those were the old days of times past.
Retro. Those are the golden days of nostalgia!
  • Nostalgia Filter: Retro Wald's Nostalgia Wave can invoke this on people, putting them in a trance as they reminisce over their older days to the point that they're rendered impotent.
  • Out of Focus: The Goldtsuikers take a severe backseat this episode, only really getting involved in the final mecha fight.
  • Purely Aesthetic Era: Retro Wald's power causes the whole city to undergo this, with the setting invoking a hybrid Taisho-Showa era Japan, while various characters are dressed in Showa-era fashion.
  • Shout-Out:
    • Great Retro Wald invokes a Hand Blast move that is highly similar to Ultraman.
    • When ZenkaiOh and TwokaiOh were hit by Great Retro Wald's Nostalgia Shield, everyone caught in its field becomes stuck speaking in retro slang, uttering trending gibberish from the past such as comedian Kei Tani's "Gacho~n!", and the infamous "Sheh!" with its memetic pose from Osomatsu-kun.
    • When Yatsude encourages Ryo to change the channel on the old CRT television, one of the programs shown on it is Playgirl (1969).
  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome: The retro-fied CrocoDaiOh becomes a literal pirate ship, which shortly crash-lands due to it being unable to fly.
  • You Remind Me of X:
    • Magine lampshades how Ryo reminds her of herself as a child in the beginning of the episode.
    • Watching Yatsude's kindness towards him and Ryo reminds Stacy of how kindly his mother had treated him before her supposed passing.
