Hill-Fu

Original air date: 9/30/2022 (produced in 2021)

In preparation for a match against Sandy, Narlene and Nobby teach SpongeBob their country style of karate.

"Hill-Fu" contains examples of:

  • Art Shift: The scenes of Bubble Bass, Harvey, and Kevin running to attack Sandy are done in a comic book style.
  • Dark Horse Victory: Sandy is able to curb-stomp all the competitors in the karate tournament. Prior to the battle, SpongeBob learns Hill-Fu from Nobby so he can stand a chance. After a big battle, he and Sandy end up tying, and agree to share the badge... and then Nobby appears, karate-chops them both, and claims the badge for him and Narlene.
  • Eyedscreen: Before Bubble Bass fights Sandy, two black bars appear from the screen to highlight him glaring at Sandy, and the same then happens with Sandy glaring at him.
  • I Know Mortal Kombat: Subverted. Bubble Bass, Harvey, and Kevin are the only campers to challenge Sandy directly instead of running in terror and hiding like all the others (besides SpongeBob). The three of them use their "comic book style" to fight, which amounts to making poses against multicolored backdrops. Sandy points out that they don't know any actual moves, just the poses, and effortlessly knocks them down.
  • Impossibly Cool Clothes: The addition of a new badge to Narlene's shoddy jacket causes it to transform into a black leather jacket, studded with spikes and zippers.
  • Literal Metaphor: Narlene teaches SpongeBob that his most powerful weapon is his brain, meaning that he should use tactics and strategy over just brute force. When fighting Sandy, SpongeBob takes his brain out of his head and throws it at her... and this does prove to be his most effective attack against Sandy.
  • Pathetically Weak: SpongeBob is so bad at karate that even a sea bunny can effortlessly defeat him and slam him against the ground repeatedly.
  • Significant Wardrobe Shift: SpongeBob's transition into a master of Hill-Fu is marked by him now wearing blue overalls, having a corncob pipe, and wearing a rope belt, and he keeps this outfit for the rest of the episode.
  • Younger Mentor, Older Disciple: Nobby — who is smaller than SpongeBob and barely able to form full sentences, mostly speaking in childlike babbling — trains SpongeBob in Hill-Fu.

Sun's Out, Fun's Out

Original air date: 09/30/2022

During a Heat Wave, all the campers need to find a place to cool off.

"Sun's Out, Fun's Out" contains examples of:

  • Heat Wave: It's incredibly hot — the sand is burning and the characters can barely stand on it, and multiple things melt from the heat.
  • Hope Spot: Sandy has a working air-conditioner in her suit. When SpongeBob and Patrick go inside, they cause it to overheat and short circuit.
  • Meat-O-Vision: To distract himself from the heat, Squidward meditates and recites cold items. When he lists ice cream, Patrick visualizes him as an ice cream cone and starts licking him.
  • Medium-Shift Gag: Live-action pictures of ice cream and glaciers appear behind Squidward as he meditates.
  • Musicalis Interruptus: When all the campers are stuck together, SpongeBob starts singing a campfire song, only to be interrupted by Squidward, who doesn't enjoy it.
  • Rhyming Title
  • Unexplained Recovery: Despite getting crushed by a massive boulder, Bubble Bass, Kevin, and Harvey show up later with no sustained injuries.
  • Wingding Eyes: Exaggerated. When Krabs realizes that he can charge the campers to stay in his cabin for the air conditioning, his eyes turn into two rolls of dimes and nickels that spurt coins.
