Recap / Junior Officers S1E22 "The Undersea Twister"

Go To

"The Undersea Twister" is the 22nd chapter of Junior Officers.

Deborah has to help an angelfish while the Octopod flees an undersea twister.

The Undersea Troper:

  • Bad Boss: In this chapter, Professor Inkling tells Deborah about Captain Seacliff, the previous captain, who was abusive towards his staff.
  • Bedhead-itis: Shellington's fur is "frazzled and a bit greasy" while he is sick.
  • Chore Character Exploration: Deborah learns about Captain Seacliff and how Barnacles became captain while shelving books in the library.
  • Drunk with Power: According to Professor Inkling's story, Captain Seacliff used his power as captain to abuse the staff.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: Deborah mentions Sarabi, who would later go on to debut as a junior officer in "New Squirrel in Town".
  • Edible Theme Naming: The angelfish is named Jellybean.
  • Fantastic Racism: This episode further elaborates on Deborah's father's racism.
    • Deborah had to lie and tell him she was going to college on a fully-paid scholarship instead of becoming an Octonaut because he would not have approved of her working under a polar bear.
    • Margaret was forced to quit her job at a grocery store because her boss was a tiger.
  • From Nobody to Nightmare: As mentioned in Professor Inkling's story, Captain Seacliff seemed to be nice until he became captain.
  • Growling Gut: Shellington's stomach rumbles.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Jerk: Deborah's father immediately accepting his illegitimate granddaughter seems sweet...until you realize that he only did it because David brought her home.
  • My Greatest Failure: Professor Inkling considers his stint with Captain Seacliff to be this.
  • Out Sick: Deborah has to work the lab alone because Shellington is still out of commission.
  • Red and Black and Evil All Over: Downplayed; Deborah wears red and black instead of her normal lavender, indicating how angry she is.
  • Stay in the Kitchen: Deborah's father is shown to be sexist as well as racist, as her mother had to stop working after she married him (implied to be against her will), and Margaret had to quit her job because he wanted her to be at home after school helping her mother cook dinner.
