"ミュージカルだよ! イェイッ!" ("Myūjikaru da yo! Ieie!" - English "It's a Musical! Yay!"): The students of Sunshine Academy perform a musical called "Jewel Side Story" about a fight between two gangster groups called the Cats and the Dogs.
This episode contains the following tropes:
- Banana Peel: One is thrown onto the stage during a singing part with Mikage and Ruby, and predictably Mikage doesn't pay attention and slips on it.
- Drop the Washtub: At the end of the episode, Opal tries to close the stage curtain but instead pulls a lever that drops washtubs on a few of the people on the stage, as well as a giant one on the giant Garnet prop, causing it to fall over and destroy the stage background.
- Fartillery: Ruby, as her character Tamako, is given a yam to eat and then farts on Kanon's character Flower as a result. In the play, this is what kills Flower.
- Musical Episode: It's literally titled "It's a Musical! Yay!", just in case you missed it.
- Running Gag: Sango keeps asking Jill about various unrealistic aspects of the play (e.g. "why is everyone singing?" and "why are they turning the set around during a fight scene?") and gets a response of "That's because it's a musical."
- School Festival: The play is performed as part of Sunshine Academy's cultural festival.
- School Play: The characters perform a musical called "Jewel Side Story".
- Shout-Out: The musical, "Jewel Side Story", is a reference to West Side Story. It even begins with a song involving the characters repeatedly snapping their fingers.
- The Show Must Go On: All sorts of things go wrong during the play - Garnet has to use the bathroom mid-play and is replaced by Ruby, characters keep cutting in with personal problems instead of acting in-character, there's a malfunction in the wardrobe department, and a plot hole is created when 10 pages of the script are skipped - and yet it somehow goes surprisingly well until the stage actually gets destroyed at the end of the episode.
