Recap / Jackie Chan Adventures S 1 E 4 Enter The Viper

Go To

Jackie investigates the snake talisman, which has fallen into the hands of a museum. In order to prevent the Dark Hand from stealing it, Jackie and Section 13 decide to steal it themselves.

This plan is complicated by a Classy Cat-Burglar named Viper, who is trying to steal an unrelated jewel.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Added Alliterative Appeal: The Pink Puma gem that Jade was originally trying to steal.
  • All Part of the Show: At the Thanksgiving Day parade, the spectators think Jackie and Viper's fight with the Shadowkhan is part of the parade, cheering at different points.
  • Buffy Speak: Jade decribes the day before Thanksgiving as "Thanksgiving Eve"note .
  • Broken Pedestal: Jade is completely shaken up when she learns Viper's deceit over her.
    Jade: Viper...pulled a Viper?
  • Classy Cat-Burglar: Viper, who tries to burgle the museum at the same time as Jackie.
  • Do Not Do This Cool Thing: An In-Universe example. Jackie tries to dissuade Jade from being a criminal like Viper and tells her not to idolize heists, but his attempts to steal the talisman (even if he had good reasons for doing so) don’t really help his case.
Jade: You got in [the museum]! You are so cool!
Jackie: I am not cool! I’m breaking the law.
    Jade: [unconvinced] Uh-huh.
  • Heist Clash: Jackie breaks into the New York Metropolitan Museum to steal the snake talisman in order to protect it from the Dark Hand. At the same time, Viper also breaks into the museum to steal a diamond. The two accidentally swap loot. The Dark Hand themselves arrive just as Viper has escaped and Jackie is arrested.
  • Hero-Worshipper: Jade is positively agog with Viper once she meets her.
  • Implausible Deniability: Jackie denies planning to steal the talisman from the museum despite wearing the clothes and having tools needed for a heist. When Jackie tries to keep Jade from idolizing Viper and claim she’s Not So Similar to him, Viper points out that he’s also breaking the law, leading Jackie to argue that he’s not a crook.
  • Impossible Thief: Once the snake talisman makes the Statue of Liberty disappear, the police assume Jackie is one of these and demand he explain what he did with it.
  • Invisibility: The power of the snake talisman.
  • Mirror Routine: Parodied. When Jackie and Viper first encounter each other, due to being similarly dressed and in the same pose, Jackie thinks he's looking into a mirror, but believes it's "broken" due to the reflection looking nothing like him. He learns the truth really quickly when Viper attacks him.
  • Mistaken Confession: At the end of the episode, Jackie is surrounded by police and he immediately surrenders the Pink Puma. Turns out the cops are really here to ask what he did to the Statue of Liberty, which turned invisible when the Snake Talisman lodged between her toes.
  • Necessarily Evil:
    • Jackie and Section 13 decide to burgle the museum of the snake talisman to prevent the Dark Hand from doing the same. This causes Jackie some consternation when Jade gets excited at the prospect of stealing the talisman.
    • Jackie later insists to Viper that he is not a crook, but an archaeologist.
  • No Honor Among Thieves: Jackie says this to Jade word for word after Viper's double-cross.
  • Satchel Switcheroo: How Jackie and Jade end up with the Pink Puma diamond while Viper gets the Snake Talisman. The sacks get knocked out of each other's hands during their first encounter, and Viper grabs the one closest to her when she runs off.
  • See the Invisible: Jade exposes an invisible Shadowkhan by dousing him in green paint.
  • Shout-Out: The Pink Puma was obviously named after The Pink Panther.
  • Spanner in the Works: Viper happens to be robbing the Pink Puma from the museum at the same time Jackie is there to take the Snake talisman. Her presence ends up throwing his heist off the rails when she ends up with the talisman.
  • Tempting Fate: When Jackie tries to convince the museum curator to let him take the Snake Talisman and warns him that the Dark Hand will make an attempt to steal it, the curator tells him that they have upgraded the security system and doubts the Dark Hand will be a serious threat. Considering how easily Jackie, Viper, and Jade managed to get through the security system, it’s clear the curator’s confidence is misplaced and it’s all too likely that the Dark Hand would have little trouble breaking in and getting past security had they gone through with the heist as planned.
  • Unusually Uninteresting Sight: Viper's first moment on camera is spent ignoring Jackie's fight with Ratso and taking stealthy pictures of artifacts.
  • Villain Respect: Valmont and the Dark Hand are quite impressed with Jackie's supposed theft of the Pink Puma.
Valmont: Jackie Chan, a thief? Oh, perhaps there's hope for him after all.
  • Weight and Switch: Jackie does this with a Statue of Liberty souvenir for the Snake Talisman.
