Recap / Jack Ryan S 01 E 05 End Of Honor

Go To

Sulemain's road to radicalisation is shown in a series of flashbacks to his youth. In the present day, Jack sets up a trap for Sulemain, which gives him an interesting new lead. But how do kidnapped doctors figure into the terrorist plot?

Tropes:

  • Bigot with a Badge: It's at least implied with the French policemen who end up arresting Sulemain - they spot Ali smoking a joint and massively escalate the situation, ultimately leading to a scuffle.
  • Call-Back:
  • Cassandra Truth: In Sulemain's flashback, he interviews for a job with a bank who are derisive of his assertion that banks need to get on board with electronic banking.
  • From Nobody to Nightmare: A series of flashbacks show Sulemain's journey from mild-mannered business graduate struggling against prejudice to his radicalisation.
  • Guile Hero: Despite being busted for posing as Ali, Jack uses the situation to his advantage. When Sulemain vows to get revenge on him for killing Ali, Jack types back that he'll find Hanin first. Sulemain's lack of response indicates that it's true she left him; if it wasn't he'd just have denied it.
    Sulemain: I will find you.
Jack: Not before I find Hanin.
  • Had to Come to Prison to Be a Crook: Sulemain's flashbacks show him becoming radicalised in prison. Before that, he was simply a loving brother who worked at a falafel stand while trying to break into banking.
  • Imposter Exposing Test: When Jack pretends to be Ali on the game forum, Sulemain poses no less than three tests to determine if it really is Ali on the other end of the chat. Jack passes the first two with the help of his team*... but he fails the third, recognizing the start of an Islamic blessing as a prompt for a response, but not knowing the brother's unique reply.
  • Kick the Dog: The job interview in Sulemain's flashback. He's brought in by a secretary who mispronounces his name and immediately asked about a paper he wrote about the future of banking being online. He barely manages to explain the basic thesis before he's told that the bank doesn't endorse them, and has no opportunity to explain or defend his views before being glared out of the room. The whole thing looks as if the interviewers only invited him along to deride him.
  • Mama Bear: When told she and her daughters will be sent back to Syria unless she can offer something, like information. She tells the official that her husband is the terrorist on the news, but backpedals when she realises her son, Samir, could be endangered by her giving information.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Victor finds out that a man he killed previously was innocent, and targeted by an admin error. He's guilt-stricken at having killed an innocent man, and is put on leave.
  • Not Quite Dead: The ending sees Yazid, two episodes after his apparent death in a drone strike, resurface at the Turkish refugee camp Hanin and her daughters fled to. He's still on their trail.
  • Pet the Dog: Sulemain asks Dr Nadler what he and the other captured doctors need (food, water, medicine), and promising to see that they get those things. These actions take on a different complexion later in the season.
  • Something Only They Would Say: The flashback where Ali visits Sulemain in prison establishes a joke they share, where Sulemain says "Peace be with you," and Ali replies, "Not if she's been with you first!" When talking to Jack who's pretending to be Ali on the game forum, Sulemain uses the opening phrase to check that it's Ali. Jack knows he's being tested but can't guess the correct reply.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Ali playing at being a tough guy in 2001 in Paris starts a chain of events that leads to Sulemain being arrested and sent to prison, where he becomes radicalized, ultimately becoming the leader of a terrorist cell with Ali as his right hand.
