Tropes

  • Bad Liar: Jack tells Cathy his being escorted from the party by helicopter was over a shipment of tainted Romanian lettuce. She's understandably skeptical.
  • Benevolent Boss: Greer notices Jack sitting uncomfortably and asks what's up. Jack tries to dismiss the problem as having "Tweaked my back" during the fight last episode, but Greer, who's seen Jack's file, orders him to go get it looked at.
  • Bookends: The episode begins and ends with explosives controlled by a Dead Man Switch. First Jack's grenade trick from the pilot is seen by security footage in a meeting. Later, an apartment in Paris is stormed, and a woman wearing a suicide vest is shot by police who don't realise the explosives will go off if she loses her grip on the switch in her hand.
  • Call-Back: Jack gets to watch his tussle with Sulemain and his brother in the Pilot when the security footage is played at a debriefing he attends.
  • Continuity Nod: At the hospital, Jack refuses to take medication for his back. Book-version Jack Ryan has a history of dependency on pain medication stemming from his back injury.
  • Hidden Badass: Matice gives the analyst a gun and a basic lecture on gun safety, not realising he's talking to a former Marine. Jack takes the gun and handles it in a way that indicates he knows what he's doing, and Matice shuts up.
  • Mama Bear: Hanin's protectiveness towards her children is shown when she calls Sara away when one of her husband's followers takes too close an interest in the fourteen-year-old. Unfortunately, she can't protect her daughter when she's not around, leading to her decision to take her children and run.
  • Running Gag: Both the doctor and Cathy advise Jack to try yoga for his back. Later, Greer walks into an office where Jack is working to find him in the Upwards Facing Dog pose and asks what the hell he's doing.
  • Shout-Out:
  • Spotting the Thread: Seeing the footage of Sulemain in the interrogation room, Greer realises from the way he reacts to being cuffed that he has a criminal record, which leads them to France where he was imprisoned.
