Recap / It Feels More Like A Memory Chapter 24 Interlude Have You Read This

Go To

"interlude: (have you read this?)" contains examples of:

  • Adaptational Context Change: Both Philip Burr and Alexander Hamilton want to defend their father figure (Aaron Burr and George Washington respectively) from a perceived slight, telling the father figure they'll "write under a pseudonym, you'll see what I can do to [the perceived offender]," and the father figure not wanting that to happen. However, Alexander just assumes Jefferson did something and has no idea what it is, while Philip recognizes the concrete slight of rumors in newspapers against his family. Philip’s usage of the line references Alexander’s use, as it’s both Philip trying to emulate him and meant to show Philip being similar to him; Alexander’s use isn’t about emulating or being similar to anyone. Finally, Philip also wants to defend the rest of his family, not just his father figure; Alexander felt only his father figure was threatened and thus in need of defending.
  • all lowercase letters: Like every other chapter title of this fic, this chapter's title is in all lowercase letters.
  • A Boy and His X: The point of Aaron Jr.’s section. It’s entirely about how special Martha the cat is to him, how he misses her in New York City, and how she comes all the way from Philadelphia to be with him.
  • A Day in the Limelight: For James Madison, Elizabeth Schuyler Burr, and the Burr children. They become point of view characters in this chapter, in a fic that’s usually from Aaron Burr’s point of view.
  • From Stray to Pet: Aaron Jr. originally got Martha the cat when he found her in the alleyway and took her home to be a pet.
  • Idiosyncratic Episode Naming: Following the convention of naming every chapter title after a Hamilton lyric, this chapter takes its title from the lyric “Have you read this?” from "The Reynolds Pamphlet."
  • Lower-Deck Episode: A majority of this chapter is from the point of view of minor characters: the 5 Burr children. It shows how their lives are impacted by their father’s presidential campaign and the scandal surrounding their parents and their family friend Alexander Hamilton.
  • Switching P.O.V.: Most chapters follow Aaron Burr's point of view, but like the other interlude chapter, this chapter doesn't follow his point of view at all. Instead, it switches from Madison to Eliza to each of the 5 Burr kids from this timeline (Philip, Angie, Alex, Aaron Jr., and John).
  • Tropey, Come Home: Martha the cat got left in the Burrs' Philadelphia home when they moved to New York City, and Aaron Jr. spends his point of view section feeling miserable about her absence. He sends a letter asking after her wellbeing in Philadelphia and gets a response saying she ran away. This storyline is resolved when Martha shows up in New York City and jumps into his arms.
  • We Named the Monkey "Jack": Aaron Jr. has trouble naming his cat and lets Alexander do it. He names the cat Martha, after the human Martha Washington, since Martha named a cat after him.
