Recap / ITV In The Face S 1 E 5 On Emley Moor Baht At

Go To

Franchise: Yorkshire
Companies: Yorkshire Television (YTV)

Provides examples of:

  • Another Story for Another Time: Harris states Tyne Tees' side of the merger story will be told in their episode, and includes the famous line from Conan the Barbarian (1982) invoking this trope.
  • Brief Accent Imitation: Harris does a brief impression of Alan Whicker when discussing his involvement with YTV.
  • Credits Gag: "Worldvision Productions is not affliated with World Vision International, a religious and charitable organisation, and nor is your mother."
  • Credits Montage: The episode closes out with clips from old YTV programmes over the theme music from Emmerdale.
  • Edutainment Show: YTV was already producing schools programmes before it officially went on air.
  • Emergency Broadcast: Harris describes Redvers Kyle as the kind of continuity announcer you'd want to announce an incoming nuclear attack because "his Dairy Milk-smooth voice would be a comfort in civilisation's final moments."
  • Jump Scare: The episode opens with a discussion of the YTV ident's history of startling viewers with its abrupt brass fanfare.
  • Oop North: Yorkshire folk have a reputation for being plain-spoken almost to the point of bluntness. This was reflected in YTV's rather stark style of presentation.
    • Harris posits that the county's storied history of trade unionism may also a have been a factor in YTV's perennial bouts of industrial action.
  • Shout-Out:
    • The episode title is a reference to the Yorkshire folksong that YTV's fanfare was based on, "On Ilkley Moor Baht'At". Emley Moor was the location of one of YTV's transmitters.
    • An clip from Conan the Barbarian (1982) is used when Harris mentions ITV's late night strands, with Yorkshire being the first to create one.
    • YTV is described as being the televisual equivalent of Firestorm, whose secret identity is two people rather than just the usual one, because it was formed from a merger of two companies, Telefusion Yorkshire and Yorkshire Independent Television.
    • James Blish gets a mention at one point.
    • Harris lists off some of Yorkshire's contributions to ITV, including Rising Damp, Flambards, Harry's Game, The Darling Buds of May, The Beiderbecke Trilogy, Les Dawson's first major TV series, Countdown, "and as if to balance it out, 3-2-Tossing-1".
    • Emmerdale is highlighted as YTV's only lasting legacy in the age of generic ITV.
  • Spin-Off: The Yorkshire region was sectioned off from the original North of England franchise in 1967 because the ITA were anxious about the original founding companies (Granada, Associated Rediffusion, ABC and ATV) having too much power within the network.
  • The Stinger: One last blast of the Yorkshire fanfare with a still image of Ken Dodd appearing out of nowhere.
  • Trope Maker: YTV came up with an early version of breakfast television by starting an hour earlier than other regions with a grab-bag format of news, repeats and cartoons. TV-AM would later develop their format for breakfast television on that same basic mix, albeit held together by presenters in a studio.
