Recap / I Dream Of Jeannie S 2 E 12 How Do You Beat Superman

Go To

With Tony glued to the television, Jeannie attempts to make him jealous by bringing her fictitious beau to life.

Tropes:

  • Batman Gambit: A double example. Jeannie blinks up a handsome millionaire to make Tony jealous, and succeeds at first. However, when Tony finds out that the man is merely Jeannie's creation, he acts as if he's happy about their relationship and thinks they'll make a wonderful couple. This makes Jeannie incredibly regretful that she conjured up this plan, and she gets rid of the illusory guy.
  • Book Ends: The story begins and ends with Jeannie trying to get Tony away from a televised football game on a beautiful day. The first time, he remains glued to the screen. At the end, he goes with her.
  • Ceiling Corpse: A non-corpse variation; when Tony reveals that he knew and says she would have been "up in the air" if he'd let her go through with the wedding, Jeannie blinks him onto the ceiling.
  • Didn't Think This Through: Upset that her plan failed, Jeannie blinks Tony Millionaire out of existence again while he's holding her in a dipping posture. She promptly falls over.
  • Fourth-Date Marriage: In an effort to capture Tony's attention, Jeannie stages a whirlwind romance with a handsome millionaire who is practically perfect in every way. After only a few dates, she shows Tony a diamond engagement ring and says they plan to marry that Saturday.
  • Give Away the Bride: After Mr. Millionaire "proposes" to her, Jeannie asks Tony to give her away.
  • Ironic Echo:
    • When Jeannie starts talking about her fictitious beau, Tony laughs and tells her he's not the jealous type. After "Mr. Millionaire" returns her gloves and flirts with her, Jeannie says she's glad Tony's not the jealous type.
    • When Jeannie asks her if he likes her more than football, Tony tries to play it off by saying that the comparison is like oranges and lemons. She isn't fooled. As she's preparing for a date, Tony asks her if she likes him better than Mr. Millionaire, and she throws the words back at him.
  • Mundane Utility: When Jeannie says she's going to the supermarket (where she "met" Mr. Millionaire), Tony jumps up from the TV and says he'll go with her. At his request, Jeannie "pauses" the game until they return.
  • Operation: Jealousy: Jeannie makes up a fake beau to make Tony jealous over her, which works. Even after he finds out "Mr. Millionaire" was fake, at least a little jealousy seems to have stuck with him: Jeannie commenting that she's going to the supermarket causes him to jump up from the TV and go with her.
  • The Girl Who Fits This Slipper: Jeannie first introduces her fake beau to Tony by having him turn up on the doorstep with her gloves, which he claims she dropped. She even says she feels like Cinderella.
