Recap / Hudson And Rex S 4 E 12 No Man Is An Island

Go To

Charlie, Rex and Sarah travel to an isolated island community caught up in a resettlement dispute turned violent. Meanwhile, Donovan tries to stop a British police officer from derailing the investigation.

Tropes:

  • Armed Blag: Three years ago, Tumbler orchestrated a bank robbery in North London and made off with five million pounds. However, the incompetence of his hired help resulted in the job being botched and the deaths of several people, including Nigel’s partner Freddie who was one of the responders to the crime. Now Nigel seeks to arrest Tumbler in order to get justice for his late partner, believing Henry Ward to be him due to the photo of him in a paper about the resettlement dispute. He turns out to be right, although it’s not just Nigel who’s been searching for him.
  • Ax-Crazy: Seems to be Harper's default state. His idea of getting Tumbler to lead him to the money from the bank heist was to shoot at him and his farm, uncaring that innocent bystanders like Gabriel would be hurt. Then when he respectively gets eyewitnesses to his crimes and the police get involved in the situation, he changes his plan to silencing anyone and everyone who might interfere with his objective. Tucker Moore ended up becoming an unfortunate casualty, and Harper almost succeeds in killing Tumbler, Donovan, and Nigel as well if not for Charlie, Rex, and Sarah's arrival thwarting his plan. And according to Tumbler, his former henchman was also responsible for Freddie’s death during the robbery three years prior.
  • Be as Unhelpful as Possible: The investigation takes place on Avalon Island, a small island community off the coast of Newfoundland that contains less than ten people with the government trying to relocate them by paying each of them $250,000, the catch being that all residents have to agree to do so. However, Henry Ward, who moved to the island two years ago despite the circumstances, inexplicably refuses to move, delaying the process. This nets him a lot of resentment from the other locals who frequently call him out on his foolish and selfish behavior, especially Tucker Moore who spearheaded the resettlement drive due to his business being deep in debt and recently asked the government for a new vote. The two men have been at each other’s throats ever since. Ward aka "Tommy Tumbler’s" refusal to move is because he would be on the lam again if he did, as he chose the island to be his hiding place from the police. Fortunately, Tumbler decides to turn himself in after realizing how much trouble he caused for the locals and that a courtroom would be the best way to escape his criminal past, allowing the rest of the population to finally be able to move.
  • Blatant Lies: When questioned by Charlie and Sarah, Henry and Gabriel insist that the shooting was a hunting accident despite Gabriel's mother calling the SJPD claiming it to actually be attempted murder. That is until Rex finds the used bullets hidden in Henry’s shed and evidence of the crime scene being tampered with, making Charlie threaten Gabriel with charges of obstruction if he doesn’t tell them the truth. Ward was lying to try and keep the police from getting involved, afraid that they would eventually figure out his real identity. Gabriel was most likely unaware of this reason and just helped out of loyalty.
  • Cassandra Truth: Nigel believes that Henry Ward is actually a wanted bank robber named Tommy "Tumbler" Henderson, who is also responsible for the death of Nigel’s former partner. His boss Arthur Somerset however dismissed his claims and eventually put him on leave for PTSD, which prompted Nigel to go after Ward himself without authorization. He was right all along, but it was actually Harper who was responsible for the murder according to Tumbler. Nigel expresses his gratitude to the SJPD for their help in proving his leads.
  • Closed Circle: There’s less than ten people left on Avalon Island, all but one wanting to move away. The residents include shooting victims Henry Ward and his farmhand Gabriel Mostafa, Gabriel’s mother who runs the local bed and breakfast, mechanic Tucker Moore, unofficial tour guide Gordo, and sightseer John Harper.
  • Cop Killer: Harper has no qualms against trying to kill Donovan and Nigel alongside Tumbler when they get in his way. He's also the one who's actually responsible for Freddie’s death according to Tumbler.
  • Dumb Muscle: Nigel mentions that the men Tumbler hired to help with the robbery were this, as they didn’t know what the score was and were slow on the uptake, resulting in the robbery being botched and Nigel’s partner Freddie and several other people being killed in the ensuing shootout. Turns out one of those men, John Harper, had also been hunting down Tumbler using the resettlement story like Nigel because his former boss ran off with his henchmen’s share of the money from their last job.
  • Everything Is Racist: Donovan faces conflict with Nigel as the latter accuses him of not taking him and his objective seriously due to him being black, despite both of them being so and having faced the same kinds of racial prejudice in their careers. It’s also what Nigel accused his boss of in regards to the dismissing of the investigation of Freddie’s death, as him and Nigel were two of the few black members on the force at the time. Somerset tries to justify it as Nigel just playing the race card and suffering from PTSD, only for Donovan to call the superintendent out on his actions.
  • Faking the Dead: Henry Ward’s real name is Tommy "Tumbler" Henderson, a wanted safecracker responsible for a bank robbery in London of over five million pounds and the following shootout that resulted in the death of Nigel's partner Freddie. After faking drowning to death in Spain two years prior to the episode's events, Tumbler resumed his life in Avalon Island under a new identity, but his past comes back to haunt him when his picture in the resettlement dispute attracts the attention of Nigel seeking justice for his partner and Tumbler’s former henchman John Harper, who had been hunting him after his boss withheld his crew's share of the money from their last job.
  • Frame-Up: It is initially suspected that Tucker Moore is behind the shooting due to his history with Ward and the gun used to do it is found in his workshop, with the mechanic nowhere to be found. That is until he’s found dead in the water, having been so for at least twenty-four hours. There’s also Moore having severe swan-neck deformity in his fingers making him unable to use a gun (which Ward was aware of), officially deeming him innocent. Harper is the one who planted the gun to frame him for the shooting after killing him.
  • From Bad to Worse: The situation escalates when Tucker Moore is found murdered. Even more so when Nigel arrives on the island to kill Tommy out of revenge with Donovan trying to stop him, only for the three of them to be shot at by Harper.
  • He Knows Too Much: Although he initially had no intention of killing his former boss and was only trying to scare him into leading him to the money, Harper ended up killing Tucker Moore because the latter saw him shooting at Tumbler's farm. Charlie expresses his exasperation when Harper claims that he had no other option but to do so.
  • It's All About Me: Tumbler was completely fine with keeping Avalon Island's remaining citizens trapped there and drowning in financial debt so long as he didn’t have to give up what he chose to be his hiding place from the authorities, even when his psychopathic ex-henchman comes looking for him and terrorizes the place. He fortunately has a Jerkass Realization after the major crimes team save him and the case is solved, deciding that turning himself in and taking responsibility for his actions is a better way to be free of his past than running away from his problems all the time which allows the other residents to finally be able to move.
  • It's Personal: Charlie, Sarah, and Rex’s first trip to the island has them meeting Nigel Banks, a London Metropolitan police officer investigating Henry Ward believing him to be the wanted bank robber Tommy "Tumbler" Henderson despite reports of him supposedly drowning off the coast of Spain two years ago. He’s actually from the Cambridge Police on an unauthorized mission due to his boss Superintendent Arthur Somerset not believing and dismissing him despite the evidence, as Nigel also wanted to bring Tumbler in for killing his partner Freddie. When the SJPD help him prove his evidence correct, Nigel expresses his gratitude, but then attempts to kill Tumbler out of revenge. Fortunately, Donovan manages to talk him out of it.
  • Tranquil Fury: Donovan doesn’t take too kindly to Nigel accusing him of getting his position of Superintendent by being a Yes-Man, calmly telling the British officer that he is in a foreign jurisdiction and that Nigel will be charged with obstruction of justice should he interfere with the SJPD's investigation in any way, including confrontation with Henry Ward.
  • Undying Loyalty: Gabriel to Henry Ward, enough that he was willing to help him lie about the shooting being a hunting accident (even if he didn't know the real reason why). Charlie deconstructs this by pointing out that not only is Gabriel risking being charged with obstruction, he’s also giving his mother more to worry about.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Donovan chews out Somerset for his treatment of Nigel, ignoring his leads regarding Tumbler’s whereabouts and dismissing him, with Dovovan pointing out how Somerset’s decisions will make him look incompetent if his subordinate’s leads are actually right, causing the British superintendent to give his full cooperation in the investigation.
