Fallen Heroes: Part 1

Directed By: Kathryn Bigelow
Story By: Eric Overmyer
Teleplay By: Lois Johnson

Judge Gibbons gets stabbed outside the courthouse, and thanks to a print hit on a nearby pay phone, Bayliss and Pembleton discover the murderer was Junior Bunk, though instead of being the crying, frightened man arrested the first time, he's now arrogant and cold. In fact, when he's locked up at a desk, Junior manages to get a gun out of a desk, kills three uniformed policemen, and wounds Ballard and Gharty before Bayliss, Giardello, Kellerman, and Lewis manage to shoot him dead.

Elsewhere, Falsone and Stivers get the case of a parole officer who was killed in a drive-by shooting, and the case leads back to Pony Johnson.

This episode contains examples of:

  • A-Team Firing: Most of the police miss when shooting at Junior Bunk at first, and Pembleton hesitates. Not until Bayliss, Giardello, Kellerman and Lewis shoot together are they able to take Junior down.
  • Call-Back:
  • Continuity Snarl: When Falsone and Stivers ask Munch if he remembers Pony Johnson, and Munch talks about it like it was his case, when it was Felton and Howard's case, though given the fact Felton is dead and Howard is no longer on the squad, it's possibly justified.
  • Creator In-Joke: At the beginning of the episode, Bayliss tells Pembleton he's been reading The Corner, co-written by David Simon.
  • Dramatic Irony: Munch and Billie Lou talk over drinks at the Waterfront, not realizing there was a shoot-out at police headquarters until they hear sirens.
  • Foreshadowing: Pembleton hesitates before trying to shoot Junior, which is not only a Continuity Nod (as he's always been a terrible shot), but becomes very important the next episode.
  • Imagine Spot: While under surgery, Ballard imagines she managed to shoot Junior before he shot anyone else.
  • Jurisdiction Friction: Averted - Giardello orders Bayliss and Pembleton to work with the FBI without any arguing so they can find the judge's murder.
  • Orphaned Punchline: Once again, Lewis tells the punchline, "So the bear says, 'You didn't come here to hunt, did you?'" to someone, this time while waiting at the back of Junior's house.
  • Tempting Fate: Both Kellerman and Lewis take the time to gloat at Junior about being arrested so easily for the judge's murder, and how he's going to jail for a long time. This is before Junior manages to pull out the gun from someone's desk.
  • This Is the Part Where...: Subverted - when Giardello summons Bayliss and Pembleton to his office, they imagine he's going to ask them about Judge Gibbons' murder, they're going to admit they have no suspects, though they do have the possibility of a fingerprint from a pay phone, and he's going to tell them the bosses are on his back so they better solve the judge's murder quickly. Instead, Giardello introduces them to the FBI agents who have been watching the judge.
  • This Means War!: After the shoot-out, Giardello asks everyone to mount up, and declares, "Georgia Rae wanted a war, she's got one."
  • Two-Part Episode
