Prison Riot
Directed By: Ken Fink
Story By: Henry Bromell and Tom Fontana
Teleplay By: Tom Fontana
A riot at a prison ends up killing two, and Bayliss believes Elijah Sanborn (Charles S. Dutton), who's in for murdering the drug dealer who killed his wife, may know who committed one of the murders and why.
This episode contains examples of:
- Bad Liar: Howard unconvincingly tells Giardello Bayliss is working an old murder case and not the prison murders. Giardello doesn't believe her, but lets it go.
- Call-Back:
- The two dead at the prison are James Douglas and Claude Vetter.
- Among the witnesses Bayliss, Howard, Kellerman and Lewis interview are Douglas' cousin Trevor, Tom Marans, and Alex Robey.
- Casting Gag: Tom Marans may have been featured in this episode as an example of this, as his actor Dean Winters was then playing a regular role as a prisoner in Oz, which was created by Homicide producer and writer Tom Fontana.
- Death Seeker: Elijah Sanborn falsely confesses to the murder of James Douglas because he wants to be executed.
- It's Personal: Marans killed Trevor Douglas because he was the one who killed his cousin James, who was Marans' lover in prison.
- Pet the Dog:
- After Brodie reveals he knows Pembleton isn't taking his meds as much as he used to because he feels it will help him pass the firearms exam, Pembleton admits he underestimated Brodie.
- Though Bayliss and Kellerman haven't always gotten along, when Kellerman sees Bayliss is still working the prison murders, he offers to help Bayliss.
