Chaos comes to Trolberg when the bell system begins to ring every hour, inspiring Hilda and friends to hatch an elaborate scheme to quiet the noise.

Songs at the end: "Pair of Wings" by Frankie Rose and "Hilda's Theme" by Ryan Carlson

Tropes:

  • Adaptational Early Appearance: Baba and her mother make a small appearance in this episode. While in the graphic novels, they won't show up until The Stone Forest storyline.
  • Apologetic Attacker: Alfur only gets to throw one rock at the safety patrol, and immediately apologizes afterwards.
  • Annoying Arrows: The arrows that the elves fire at the Safety Patrol definitely hurt, but cause no serious injuries. Justified since they are elf-sized arrows.
  • Code Name: Hilda and friends all use codenames when executing their plan, though Tontu doesn't like his; Hairball.
  • Comforting Comforter: After Hilda meets the bellkeeper at night and she sneaks back home, she sees her mother sleeping at her drawing board from exhaustion. She puts the jacket Johanna usually wears on her for warmth.
  • Continuity Nod: Hilda is seen riding a bike again, and remarks she is finally getting the hang of it.
  • Do Wrong, Right: The bellringer finds out that Hilda was going to sabotage the bell system, and they both observed that the noise was bothering everyone. He shows up with the key and teaches her how to overload the system.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: Peter Ostenfeld makes a brief cameo in this episode before getting focus in "The Fifty Year Night" two episodes later.
  • Forgot About His Powers: Tontu helps Hilda and Frida get into the central bell tower through Nowhere Space, but then just leaves them. Hilda doesn’t even think about just calling him for help when she comes across a locked door, even though Tontu can help her easily get through it via the same process. Justified as Tontu’s not that keen on letting people use Nowhere Space so frequently who isn’t a Nisse.
  • Hoist by Their Own Petard: Erik finds out the hard way that there is a problem with bells ringing all of the time: they are loud. The main bell also falls on him; it's a miracle he wasn't killed.
  • Job-Stealing Robot: The mechanical bellringers that Erik had installed in the bell towers effectively put the old bellkeeper out of a job. It is one reason he helps Hilda to sabotage them.
  • Karma Houdini Warranty: After covering up what really happened during Hilda's trip with the Safety Patrol and Stealing the Credit for Hilda's part in dealing with the Draugen, Erik finally gets his just desserts when a giant bell lands on top of him and traps him inside.
  • Loud of War: Erik plans to have all the bells in Trolberg ring 24/7 to keep Trolls away, unaware how much chaos it causes.
  • No Plans, No Prototype, No Backup: Averted; Hilda’s first plan to sabotage the mechanical bell ringers works, but it turns out the safety patrol installed a backup system, forcing her to quickly come up with a new plan.
  • Overworked Sleep: Hilda finds Johanna fallen asleep on her drawing board due to the immense project she has been working on.
  • Phlebotinum Overload: When she learns she can't shut off the system, Hilda puts all the bells on maximum volume so the mechanical bellringers overload and short out.
  • The End... Or Is It?: All is well. The system is down, Hilda and her friends go back to their respective homes and settle for deep sleep. The safety patrol then tests every bell. And then the Kraken awakens underwater thanks to an underwater bell. Uh oh.
  • Shoo the Dog: The bellringer yells at a troll mother and her child to leave when they perch outside his tower. He explains to Hilda that if he doesn't, the bells will hurt them.
  • Shout-Out: Hilda gathering a bunch of her friends with unique abilities on a secret mission to infiltrate a highly-guarded building, and even facing an unexpected turn of events that nearly ruined their plan. Where have I seen this before?
  • This Is Gonna Suck: Erik has this reaction when he sees a bell is about to land on top of him.
  • Useless Security Camera: There are security cameras in the central belltower, but Hilda and Frida don’t even bother to try and avoid them, and it never leads to the girls getting caught.
