Recap / Hey Arnold S 5 E 99 E 100 The Journal

Go To

When Arnold finds his father's journal, Grandpa Phil reads it to him.

This episode provides the following tropes:

  • Big "SHUT UP!": Stella to Miles while she's in labor with their son.
  • Cliffhanger: "GRANDMA! GRANDPA! YOU HAVE TO SEE THIS! I FOUND A MAP!!!" Sadly, it would take a whole 15 years to resolve this.
  • Cloud Cuckoolander: Grandma would interrupt a few times. For instance:
    • She confuses Miles and Stella's wedding with that of Prince Charles and Lady Di.
    • She always assumed that Arnold was "born on a Greyhound bus going down Highway 41", to which Grandpa says is "an old hippie song." (To be more specific, that was a lyric from "Ramblin' Man" by The Allman Brothers Band.)
  • Crotch-Glance Sex Check: Miles and Stella receive a pig as a gift from The Green-Eyed People. Stella mistakes the pig as a female and wants to call it "Isabel", but her husband changes the name to "Abner" after he sees its crotch when he opens the blanket the pig was wrapped in.
  • Dead Guy Junior: It turns out that Arnold was named his maternal grandfather (Stella's dad), who's implied to have died before he was born.
  • I've Got an X, and I'm Not Afraid to Use It!: When Grandma interrupts the story one time too many with her remarks, Phil threatens that he has a roll of tape and is not afraid to use it.
  • "Ray of Hope" Ending: After Arnold reads his dad’s journal again, he discovers a map, with the route his parents may have taken in San Lorenzo, inside of it. Arnold is given the hope that he will find them.
  • Screaming Birth: Stella while giving birth to Arnold. Doesn't help that she's in an ancient temple during a volcano eruption.
  • The Unreveal: The interpreter of the minister proclaims Miles and Stella as "Mr. and Mrs. ..." but Grandma belches loudly before the last name is revealed.
