Recap / Hamster & Gretel S1E31 "Strawberry Fest Forever"

Go To

While Dave and Kevin visit their neighbor Mrs. Maybank for a repair job, Gretel and Carolina visit the Strawberry Festival that is currently in town. Expecting things like picking strawberries, Carolina is surprised to find out it's a traveling daredevil theme park centered around renowned stuntman Jeff Strawberry, hosting many reckless and dangerous attractions and activities.

Tropes:

  • Amusingly Short List: Hamster stays at home, citing that he has a packed schedule. The schedule has only two items: running on his wheel, which he has just done, and taking a nap.
  • Breather Episode: This is the only episode where Hamster and Gretel don't have to do any heroics.
  • Butt-Monkey: After learning what the Strawberry Festival was really about, Carolina had to ride on a lot of crazy rides while Gretel was having a great time.
  • The Cameo: A very distraught Dr. Doofenshmirtz appears after an old lady managed to pop his Balloony with a flamethrower at the balloon popping stand.
  • Heroes Gone Fishing: Gretel's plot is all about attending the festival with Carolina. No bad guys appear, and Gretel uses her powers only once to keep the monster truck she and Carolina are riding from getting crushed.
  • Namesake Gag: Strawberry Fest turns out to be not about strawberries at all (thought a lot of the attractions are themed around them) but about stunt performer Jeff Strawberry.
  • No Antagonist: There is no supervillain in the episode.
  • Out of Focus: Hamster has only one scene — him checking his "packed" schedule — and otherwise has no role in the story.
  • Overly Long Gag: Emphasis on "gag". Carolina has to Heimlich a whole bunch of people because the strawberry that gets dislodged ends up flying into someone else's mouth. Eventually, she tells everyone to close their mouth to put an end to it. Doubles as a Stealth Pun as it’s literally an “overly long gag”.
  • The Real Heroes: After the demolition derby, Gretel is disappointed at how boring her mother is. Just then, a man starts choking on a strawberry, and Carolina jumps into action and administers the Heimlich maneuver on him. The strawberry then pops out into another person's mouth, and they start choking, so Carolina has to Heimlich them as well. Then she has to do it over and over, the last person being Jeff Strawberry himself. Jeff gives Carolina an autograph, calling her a real hero. This impresses Gretel a lot.
  • Sigil Spam: While the festival isn't about strawberries in particular, there are depictions of strawberries everywhere, as well as strawberry beverages, because that's Jeff's last name.
    • The logo of the Strawberry Festival itself (a flaming strawberry with lightning bolts) is also seen occasionally.
  • Strawberry Shorthand: Heavily subverted. Yes, there's strawberries, but there's nothing cute, innocent, or lovely about any of the daredevil activities at the Strawberry Festival.
    • Also subverted in-universe: Carolina expected activities like picking berries. Dave and Kevin seem to be out of the loop as well, though they don't get to experience the festival themselves.
  • Take That!: During the demolition derby, Carolina complains about everyone speeding and compares it to Florida.
  • Victory by Endurance: Gretel ropes Carolina into a monster truck demolition derby, but she insists on playing it safe, very narrowly avoiding getting hit by the other trucks. Just when it looks like they're about to get rammed into, Gretel uses her superpowers (while Carolina took no notice) to lift the truck so that the others crash into each other instead, leaving their truck the last one standing.
