Marnassier leaves an impression.

The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere the ceremony of innocence is drowned...

Nick is left reeling when his late mother, Kelly Burkhardt, turns out to be alive. A seasoned Grimm, she's spent years tracking the Wesen who killed Nick's father, a case that's now overlapped with Nick's guardianship of the coins. Clashes ensue when Monroe and Rosalee stop by to discuss Juliette's curse.

There's a new and vicious murder in a shipping container, committed by a rare and deadly Wesen who's coming for Nick.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Amazingly Embarrassing Parents: The Grimm version! Nick and his mother are catching up when Monroe and Rosalee come by with an update on Juliette. Naturally, his mother tries to kill the Blutbad coming into her son's home, who naturally tries to kill her right back, and after the ensuing scuffle she has something to say about his choice of friends. He pulls out the "missing for eighteen years" card.
Monroe: Dude, I gotta be honest: your mother scares the crap outta me.
  • Bilingual Bonus: Some of the French writing in the shipping container translates to, "tonight I've been blessed with a sailor's presence .. but not for long."
  • Call-Back: When Nick and Kelly discuss the Reapers, Nick tells her about the Reapers he faced in "Leave It To Beavers". Turns out Kelly heard about that.
  • Cliffhanger: Monroe and Rosalee call Nick to tell him the treatment for Juliette is ready, but has to be used within forty-five minutes. Nick agrees to meet them at the hospital, but the Mauvais Dentes rises up behind and leaps on him, fangs bared.
  • Couldn't Find a Pen: The Mauvais Dentes is introduced when harbour security searches a shipping container that's leaking blood. Inside, they find torn and mutilated bodies and messages in French on the walls in blood, as well as a Reaper scythe.
  • Daddy Had a Good Reason for Abandoning You: Nick's mother allowed him to think she was dead and disappeared for years to keep him safe from his fathers' killers while she hunted them down.
  • The Dreaded: Kelly Burkhardt is adamant about destroying the coins as soon as possible... until she realises a Mauvais Dentes is coming for Nick. Suddenly the coins can wait.
  • Faking the Dead: The Wesen who tried to kill Nick's mother actually killed her husband and her friend instead. Thinking they'd killed a Grimm, they took the friend's head as a trophy, which prevented her being identified properly. Kelly went with it to protect Nick while she hunted down the killers.
  • He Knows Too Much: Kimura is killed with a poisoned sandwich before Nick and Kelly can question him. However, he lives long enough to inform Renard that there are two Grimms in Portland.
  • Jurisdiction Friction: The FBI take over the harbour case, unaware that the killer is Wesen. Nick is understandably worried for them, but is given the brush-off. He's right to be worried as they both end up dead.
  • Noodle Incident: Monroe's last family reunion ended with the death of two cousins and a sheepdog.
  • Once More, with Clarity: The last few minutes of Woman In Black are shown from Kelly's point of view as she creeps around the house, hearing bits of Nick's fight with Kimura.
  • Pragmatic Villainy: When Adalind's mom wonders why Renard is pissed at Adalind for putting Juliette in a coma, Renard explains that Juliette is the one thing keeping Nick in Portland, and thus in Renard's control. If anything were to happen to her, Nick's grief might drive him to quit the force, or even leave town, and Renard considers him too big an investment to lose him like that.
  • Title Drop: Coming for Nick in this one is a Mauvais Dentes, literally "bad teeth". He's a sabre-toothed Wesen of unusual ferocity.
  • Trap Is the Only Option: The Mauvais Dentes kills an FBI agent and takes his partner hostage to draw Nick out. He knows it's a trap, but goes anyway with his mother as backup.
