The protagonists and Wen Ning reach the Burial Mounds where they find the captured junior disciples and many other cultivators. Hell breaks loose when the place becomes riddled with fierce corpses and the cultivators except the protagonists and disciples lose their spiritual energy.

  • Adaptational Early Appearance: Su She is confirmed to have the Hundred Holes Curse scars earlier than in the novel, adding on to the scandalous situation he's in after he's outed.
  • Adaptation Distillation: There are three waves of corpses in the novel, with the protagonists and junior disciples having to help eliminate the second wave and Wei Wuxian turning himself into a Spirit-Attraction Flag when everyone is too exhausted to handle the third. To quicken the time progression while keeping key events, the Spirit-Attraction Flags are made during the second wave.
  • Affectionate Gesture to the Head: Wei Wuxian likes to show his affectionate to younger boys by patting them on the head, as seen with both Wen Yuan and Lan Sizhui in this episode.
  • Back-to-Back Badasses: Lan Sizhui and Lan Jingyi fend off the corpses together and are later shown with their backs to each other while holding their swords during the fight.
  • Bait-and-Switch: The corpse that was seemingly attacking civilians last episode turns out to be Wen Ning. He verifies that he wasn't actually attacking people but trying scare them away to safety so that the corpses wouldn't harm them.
  • Batman Gambit: Wei Wuxian pretends to give Lan Qiren a page from the Collection of Turmoil (it's a blank piece of paper), prompting the panicked Su She to approach them and then instinctively use his sword to defend himself when attacked by Lan Wangji. This tricks him into revealing that he still has his spiritual energy unlike the rest of the cultivators, confirming he indeed was the one who de-powered them.
  • Blood from the Mouth: Su She forcefully breaks the Silence Spell, causing his mouth to bleed. He takes advantage of this by later spitting out blood on the array, ruining it and allowing the second wave of corpses to barge in the cave.
  • Blood-Splattered Warrior: Wei Wuxian turns his and Lan Wangji's robes into Spirit-Attraction Flags by covering them in blood.
  • Continuity Nod: Wei Wuxian recalls the time he, Wen Yuan and Lan Wangji ate together at the restaurant they're currently sitting at when he ran into the latter in his first life.
  • Empathy Doll Shot: To drive home how tragic the death of the Wen remnants were, Wen Ning finds the lone child Wen Yuan's doll when he and the protagonists arrive at the abandoned Burial Mounds and the remains of the remnants' homes.
  • Flashback Echo: Seeing all the cultivators decry him makes Wei Wuxian think back to the First Siege where the cultivation world ganged up on him, including the four major clan leaders.
  • Foreshadowing: The older cultivators' spiritual energy fade away from their weapons when they first try to fight the second wave of corpses, but Lan Sizhui's sword remains intact. Wei Wuxian later notes that the junior disciples are unaffected and concludes that someone tampered with the cultivators' powers prior to arriving at Burial Mounds, which sure enough happens to be Su She.
  • Happy Flashback: Wei Wuxian twice recalls the happier times he spent with the Wen remnants while mourning the fact that they are now all gone.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Lan Wangji puts the Silence Spell on Su She so that Wei Wuxian can continue talking without interruption. This comes back to bite the protagonists when Su She breaks the spell by force and uses his resulting Blood from the Mouth to break the array protecting everyone from the corpses.
  • Human Shield: Su She grabs hold of Nie Huaisang during his escape and uses him as a shield so that Lan Wangji can't attack him.
  • Hypocritical Humour: Lan Sizhui scolds the two Jin boys for trying to beat each other up considering their situation, only to get involved in the fight himself a moment later.
  • Match Cut: The episode twice fades in and out between the present day vs Wei Wuxian's time with the Wen remnants whenever he recalls a memory with them in the specific location, such as the scene fading from the currently deserted Burial Mounds to the inhabited and livelier Burial Mounds where Granny Wen and Wen Yuan greeted him.
  • Musical Assassin: Under the guise of fighting off the corpses with their guqins, the Moling Su Clan actually secretly mixed in dark music that sealed everyone else's spiritual energy.
  • Not Now, Kiddo: Ouyang Zizhen speaks up in Wei Wuxian's defense and points out that he saved the junior disciples so he couldn't had been the one to capture them. His father however dismisses him as he's too caught up in the mob mentality to listen to any second opinions.
  • Not So Above It All: Lan Sizhui attempts to calm down Jin Chan and Jin Ling, but gets entangled in their brawl and becomes so irritated that he forgoes any remaining politeness to join in the fight too. His cough when Lan Jingyi mocks Su She for being sensitive to comparisons with Lan Wangji also implies he has to hold himself back from reacting.
  • P.O.V. Cam: When recalling his memories with the Wen remnants, the camera shows Wei Wuxian looking at Wen Yuan from his perspective both times.
  • The Reveal: The masked cultivator that has interfered with the protagonists for the past season is revealed to be Su She, who is in cahoots with Jin Guangyao.
  • Rule of Three: Showing his nurturing side, Wei Wuxian pats (or tries to pat) a child thrice — first two times are from his memories with the toddler Wen Yuan, and the third time is with the teenager Lan Sizhui in the present.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: With his schemes now exposed, Su She doesn't even bother helping his clan with the corpses coming their way and escapes Burial Mounds via flying on his sword. And takes Nie Huaisang with him for good measure.
  • Spotting the Thread: Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian are able to pick apart Su She's erratic actions (such as the junior disciples not losing their spiritual powers unlike the older cultivators) and thus eventually outing him as the one who's been secretly working against everyone.
  • You Are Not Alone: Implied when the cultivators are dunking on Wei Wuxian at Burial Mounds with Lan Wangji standing by him. He's reminded of the First Siege and feels distraught until the ends of Lan Wangji's head ribbon flying in the wind catch his attention and the latter begins talking in his defense, suggesting that Wei Wuxian realizes he now has his companion by his side for support. The narration of the corresponding scene in the novel is more explicit about it.
