The Mad Hatter arrives in Gotham searching for his missing sister. Bruce tries to decide what to do with his look-alike. Penguin announces his candidacy for mayor.

Tropes

  • Bait-and-Switch: It looked as though Bruce's clone is going to stab him with the scissors, but then he starts cutting his long hair.
  • Booked Full of Mooks: Aubrey James and Penguin pull this trope on each other as they meet in an Italian restaurant. First, James reveals the entire staff of the restaurant are actually his hired mooks, and seemingly has Penguin at his mercy, but finds himself Out-Gambitted when the Penguin reveals that all the customers in the restaurant are his hired mooks.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: Tetch's trademark ability, accomplished in this universe through good old fashioned hypnotism.
  • Canon Character All Along: In this episode, we meet Lee's new fiancé, Mario. While he appears to be a new character at first, it turns out that he's Mario Falcone, Carmine Falcone's son.
  • Cardboard Prison: While it's not a break out, Nygma is released from Arkham way too easily, thanks to Penguin's influence.
  • Continuity Nod: Very early in the series, Alfred had to stop Bruce from holding his hand over an open flame to test how much pain he could endure. Now, Bruce's duplicate has unwittingly done the same thing long enough to suffer second-degree burns because of his apparent pain-immunity.
  • Driven to Suicide: Tetch tries to do this with Gordon, but is interrupted by Alice.
  • Evil Parents Want Good Kids: Falcone intentionally kept Mario out of the family business.
  • First-Name Basis: After sleeping together the previous night, Gordon and Vale call each other "James" and "Valerie" in the morning.
  • Identity Impersonator: At the end of the episode, Bruce's clone runs off to do this.
  • If You Ever Do Anything to Hurt Her...: Jim says this to Mario after Mario introduces himself as Lee's fiancé.
  • It Is Dehumanising: How Alfred initially refers to Bruce's clone.
  • Mythology Gag:
    • This isn't the first time that the Penguin decided to run for mayor. Or the second, since he did it once in the 60s series. Or even the third; in Batman: Earth One he successfully became Mayor.
    • Leslie Thompkins in the animated series also knew a fellow doctor with a deep, personal connection to a crime boss in "Paging the Crime Doctor".
  • Oh, Crap!: Tabitha says this when Tetch asks a love-stricken Barbara (which he hypnotized her into) what if he doesn't feel the same about her and has someone else. It nearly gets him killed when Barbara breaks a bottle to stab him with.
  • Out-Gambitted: James invites Penguin to a lunch meeting, and reveals that the wait staff are his armed goons... at which point Penguin reveals that he saw this move coming a mile away, and all the other patrons are his armed goons.
Penguin: Always one step ahead of me. (snaps his fingers and the patrons pull their guns at James and his bodyguards) Never three.
  • Villainous Friendship: Penguin arranges to have Nygma released from Arkham and aid him on his campaign.
  • Villain with Good Publicity: Penguin is now so popular, the crowds are loudly cheering for him when he announces his campaign.
  • Wham Shot: Lee's fiancé Mario greets his father... Carmine Falcone.
  • What the Hell Is That Accent?: Alice's landlord speaks with an over-the-top accent that doesn't seem to come from anywhere in particular.
  • White Sheep: Mario is this to the Falcones.
