Recap / Goosebumps (1995) S4E5/E6 "Cry of the Cat"

Go To

Based on Cry of the Cat, book #1 of Goosebumps Series 2000.

Allison accidentally runs over a cat and kills it, only to find it can come back from the dead... and is very, very angry with her as a result.

The episode provides examples of:

  • Adapted Out: Tanner, Allison's parents and Rip's minions are all omitted.
  • Adaptational Explanation: The book didn't explain why Crystal's Mom was experimenting on cats. The episode explains that she was working on a cure for a deadly virus.
  • Adaptational Jerkass: Allison and Ryan were nice in the book but are spoiled child stars in the episode, especially the latter. They get better.
  • Adaptational Ugliness: Rip in the episode has a more ragged, near-hairless appearance. He also for some reason sports a pair of wings, making him look more like a gargoyle.
  • Ambiguously Absent Parent: We never see Allison's parents, or even what her general living situation outside of filming the movie is like.
  • Dies Differently in Adaptation: In the book, Rip's final death comes when Allison throws a toy mouse at him, causing his minions to chase it and run him over in the process, trampling him to death. In the episode, since his minions were left out, he instead just eats the wind-up mouse and dies because she'd laced it with a volatile chemical.
  • Nested Story Reveal: The entire episode turns out to be just the movie they were filming.
  • Shout-Out: The episode begins with a parody of The Exorcist.
  • Sinister Silhouettes: Rip the cat's shadow appears to be frightening when he's about to find Allison at the hospital. His scary shadow appears again when Allison and Ryan are about to run away from Crystal's mom.
