Tropes:

  • Adaptational Expansion: Ghosts in Hell can temporarily leave if they become a better person while down there. To permanently stay out of Hell, the person they had wronged must sign their contract with full intention that they forgive them. However if they can’t behave in the mortal realm, they are forced return. In Elias' case, he must gain Hetty's forgiveness so she can sign his contract, but refuses to change his ways and returns at the end of the episode.
  • Brick Joke: When Elias first returns from Hell, he states that Chumbawamba plays down there on a continuous loop. Later, when the portal to Hell reopens, Trevor is present and asks "Is that Chumbawamba? I love this song!"
  • Chekhov's Gag: When Pete thinks he's going to hell, he asks Thor for tips. He advises the "eye gouge" and "genital punch" techniques. Later, when Elias tries to literally drag Pete down to Hell, he uses those exact maneuvers to fight him off.
  • Continuity Nod: The events of "The Vault" are brought up, as Hetty’s husband Elias returns to the mortal realm.
  • Deal with the Devil: Elias, on a brief furlough from Hell, tricks Pete into selling his soul to help his grandson (who was never in danger) just to get Hetty to sign a forgiveness declaration that would get him out of Hell.
  • Dragged Off to Hell: Elias tries to drag Pete along with him when he has to return to Hell.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: Elias, faced with the prospect of being good or having Thorfinn toss him back into the vault, decides to go back to Hell. Because of this, he decides to pass through Sam and Jay's current guest. It just happens that this is the celebrity chef there to judge Jay's cooking, so when Elias passes through her, she becomes horny, but is convinced it was the cooking and reviews it as "orgasmic."
  • Shout-Out: Sam tells Jay to “use the force” when encouraging him after he can’t remember what he cooked while high, due to walking through Flower.
  • Take That!: Elias mentions that one of the tortures inflicted in Hell is having Chumbawamba's "Tubthumping" playing on a loop.
  • Unsuspectingly Soused: While cooking, Jay accidentally walks through Flower and gets high. Later, he can't remember what he did to make the outstanding dish and gets Flower to get him intoxicated again to see if that will get him to recreate it.
