Recap / Ghost In The Shell SACS 1 Episode 18

Go To

A Chinese official has been granted permission to visit the Kagoshima War Memorial in Japan despite the fact that several Chinese war criminals are buried there. Section Nine is approached to provide security. Aramaki is approached by the daughter of a deceased comrade, a Colonel in the Self Defense Force, who tells him that her brother, Yu, has suffered a dramatic change of personality since their father's death.

Yu proceeds to attempt to kill the Chinese official and Aramaki finds himself contacted by the dead-Colonel who reveals that he has possessed his son. The Colonel wishes to avenge his dead wife who died in the war at the hands of Chinese war criminals. Section 9 proceeds to implant a false memory of Yu killing himself in a suicide bombing and destroys the Colonel's ghost. The event leaves him mentally broken, though.

  • All Just a Dream: After being captured, Yu detonates an explosive device, seemingly killing himself, the Major and Jin in the process. It's then revealed that this was merely a false memory written into his cyberbrain to get rid of his father's ghost.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: The Chinese visit to the memorial for believed war criminals is a country reversal of Japan's continuing to honor Sino-Japanese war veterans believed to have committed war crimes.
  • Grand Theft Me: What Colonel Tsujisaki has done to Yu, taking over his body and forcing his own desire to avenge Japan onto his son.
  • Mugged for Disguise: Yu's plan involves tying up a schoolboy and stealing his uniform in order to get close to Jin.
  • "Well Done, Son" Guy: Why Colonel Tsujisaki's son agrees to the plan despite the possibility that he may cease to exist as an individual person.
