Tropes present in this episode include:

  • Can't Kill You, Still Need You: Envy strictly tells Gluttony that they need Mustang alive and forbids him from eating the colonel and the Elric brothers. Ed and Al attempt to exploit this by separating the two homunculi to make the fight easier.
  • Combat Pragmatist: After Envy turns their arm into a snake and traps Ling in a chokehold, the latter is able to free himself by kicking dirt into Envy's eyes, then use Envy's other arm (which the homunculus turned into a scythe) to cut himself free. Envy hypocritically calls him out for fighting dirty, but Ling states that he's been made a target of assassination attempts all his life, so he's had to learn how to fight resourcefully.
  • Downer Ending: Ed, Ling, and Envy are all accidentally sucked into Gluttony's stomach, without any known way of getting them out, and Mustang soon finds out the Senior Staff of Central Command are actually working with the homunculi.
  • Foreshadowing:
    • Pride meeting with Bradley at the Fuhrer's residence (let alone in public) is one of the first clues that he's actually Selim. Also, an eagle ear will notice Pride's voice sounds very much the same as Selim.
    • Envy seems be a lot heavier than they look if they're able to leave huge imprints on the ground simply by pushing their foot down or falling flat on their back. The next episode will reveal why.
  • From Bad to Worse: The homunculi aren't just controlling the Amestrian government vis-à-vis Bradley. The entire military senior leadership has also been corrupted and is collaborating with the conspiracy.
  • Moral Myopia: Envy hates it when Ling fights dirty against them yet has no problems at all taking on the appearance of an opponent's loved one to make them hesitate.
  • Oh, Crap!: Roy's reaction when he realizes the scope and scale of the conspiracy are far worse than he could've imagined.
  • Wham Shot: When Mustang tries to ascertain General Raven's loyalties with a "joke" about Bradley being a homunculus, Raven leads him into a meeting room with the rest of the Senior Staff with Bradley soon joining, revealing that the top brass of the State Military are complicit in the homunculi's conspiracy.
