Go To

"High Anxiety" is an episode in the seventh season of Full House.

Michelle grows resentful towards Danny for continuing to baby her. Jesse, meanwhile, struggles to decide on the decor for the Smash Club before its re-opening.

Tropes seen in this episode:

  • Double Take: After handing out lunch money to Stephanie and D.J., Danny has this reaction upon realizing Kimmy had tricked him into giving her lunch money despite not being his daughter after rebuffing her attempt at getting lunch money from him.
Danny: Steph, here's your lunch money.
    Stephanie: (takes cash) Thanks, Dad.
    Danny: D.J....
    D.J.: (takes cash) Thanks, Dad.
Kimmy: (holding out her hand) Thanks, Dad.
    Danny: Nice try, Kimmy.
Kimmy: Hey, it worked last week.
  • Exact Words: Jesse tells the guy from the company he talks to over the phone to "send something over" when discussing over toilet bowls. He really should have been more specific about what he wants to be sent over in the first place...
  • Ironic Echo: Played for Laughs. When Danny has Michelle put on a head-wear he picked out early in the episode, he says "Isn't that the cutest thing you've ever seen?" despite Michelle's unenthusiastic reaction. Later in the episode, Michelle says the same line in sarcasm while passing the head-wear to Comet.
  • Share Phrase: Specifically for this episode alone, it's "Isn't that the cutest thing you've ever seen?". Danny says this when he buys some clothing he believes would look good on his daughter(s), which he demonstrates after putting on some head-wear on Michelle despite Michelle's lukewarm reaction (at best), D.J. and Stephanie recount him saying the line while having them put on clothes he wanted them to wear when they were Michelle's age, and Michelle says this line sarcastically as an Ironic Echo to Comet after having him wear said head-wear before leaving for school.
  • Take a Third Option: Rebecca asks Jesse for his meat preference for the upcoming dinner late in the episode, but Jesse is unable to provide an answer at this point due to feeling overwhelmed by the choices he has yet to make about the decor for the reopening of the Smash Club, which prompts Rebecca to make one for him, ending with this trope in effect.
Rebecca: Would you like chicken or beef for dinner?
    Jesse: I don't know. I can't decide.
    Rebecca: Okay. Fish.
  • Tempting Fate: When D.J. informs Jesse that more samples have arrived and are placed in the living room, Jesse says he's "ready to sit down and make a decision". Unfortunately for him, the samples in question are a large collection of toilet bowls. He does sit down on one of them, but by this point he's feeling too overwhelmed by the sheer amount of things he needs to get ready for the Smash Club re-opening to make a decision on his own, requiring Rebecca to help him out.
  • This Is Something He's Got to Do Himself: When Michelle climbs a fence and gets stuck late in the episode, Danny refuses to help her and talks Michelle into climbing down from the fence instead.note
  • Toilet Humour: Early in the episode, Jesse, struggling to decide on details for the reopening of the Smash Club, tells the caller inquiring about toilet to "send something over". Just his luck, he should have specified that he wanted them to send a catalog, because the company he tries to order toilet seat from does send something over — a large collection of toilet bowl samples. Hilarity Ensues.
D.J.: Good luck, Uncle Jesse, and, uh, don't forget to put the seat down.
Joey: (upon seeing Jesse sitting on one of the toilet samples) Oh, sorry, I'll come back later.
    [...]
Rebecca: Jess? (then sees Jesse on a toilet seat) Don't get up.
  • The Triple: The episode begins with D.J. and Stephanie returning from their trip to the shopping mall. The list of items Stephanie has purchased from said shopping trip consists of: a t-shirt, a belt, and a cat toy.note
Michelle: We don't have a cat.
Stephanie: I know, but the sales guy was so cute.
  • Unwanted Assistance: After Michelle expresses resentment at Danny for embarrassing her at school after he goes to the school and puts the head-wear she dislikes on her, Stephanie brings an incident in which Danny, upon noticing her shoelaces are untied, goes to her and personally ties them in front of a boy she has a crush on, while talking to Vicky about Danny's mollycoddling tendency.
Danny: I was worried you'd trip over.
    Stephanie: I did... over YOU.
  • Verbal Backspace: As the Tanner girls, Kimmy, and Steve are about to leave the house for school, D.J. urges everyone to hurry lest they become Late for School. Steve boasts that they wouldn't be late with the way he drives, only to backpedal upon seeing Danny's expression and realizing that Danny might believe he Drives Like Crazy.
D.J.: Come on, we're gonna be late.
Steve: Not the way I drive. (Danny looks at Steve with a worried expression) ...safely and carefully.
