Episode Tropes:

  • Ambiguous Syntax: Danny quips about this when hounded by reporters for costing Reggie "The Sandman" Martin his comeback bout during his first national gig.
Reporter: Danny Tanner, how does it feel to have dealt a crushing blow to a man's career?
Danny: Do you mean the Sandman's or my own?
  • Angry Collar Grab: Reggie subjects Danny to this treatment as he demands the truth regarding his wife from Danny.
Danny: Let's talk about strategy. [Reggie lifts him up by the dress shirt] Let's forget about strategy!
  • Ask a Stupid Question...: The doctor asks Uncle Jesse what's coming out after Jesse mentions Michelle's nose is running. Jesse chides him for this question.
Jesse: What's coming out of it? Diet soda.
  • Bruiser with a Soft Center: Reggie "The Sandman" Martin is a champion boxer who can be incredibly intimidating when pushed too far, but he's actually a very nice guy. He is shown to be devoted and loving to his wife. While he does lose his temper at Danny, it's clear he's just emotional knowing his wife left him and being demoralized cost him his comeback bout. Once he calms down and Danny gives him a forthright, earnest apology, he forgives Danny, understanding it's not Danny's fault no one told him about his wife. It's then revealed he only got back into boxing to help out his trainer, who needed the money and he considered a friend. He then handles the situation rationally by firing his trainer, retiring for good, and leaving to get his wife back.
  • Chekhov's Gun: The tie tack Stephanie gave Danny protects him at the end when the trainer punches Danny and only serves to hurt his hand.
  • Feed by Example: Jesse and Joey have a difficult time feeding Michelle, with Joey at one point shoving the spoon in Jesse's mouth. Jesse grimaces as the medicine tastes terrible, but Joey tells him to smile as he swallows it since Michelle is watching.
  • Jerkass: The trainer who convinced Reggie "The Sandman" Martin out of retirement and cost the guy his marriage to keep his paycheck.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: The Sandman's trainer is fired publicly on national television, and given the fact The Sandman revealed he intentionally withheld the fact his wife left him to keep his paycheck, he's going to have a lot of trouble finding work. Just to wound his pride further, he punches Danny, only to hurt his hand because he hit the tie tack, leaving Danny uninjured.
  • Never My Fault: The trainer blames Danny for costing him his job even though he only revealed information that was known to everyone except The Sandman due to his 10-month isolation.
  • "Ray of Hope" Ending: A twofer: Danny is demoralized for ruining his chances at the national hosting gig, but Joey reassures him that he can't expect his career to skyrocket overnight and that he has the talent to make it in spite of this failure. The Sandman feels terrible and quits boxing to get his wife back. Seeing as he had not been informed his wife ever left him, he is still devoted to her, and the whole incident made national news, it's a safe bet that she'll take him back.
  • Thermometer Gag: When on the phone, Jesse has no problem taking Michelle's temperature, believing it's just to go under her tongue. When the doctor clarifies that he needs to use a rectal thermometer, Jesse passes the phone to Joey.
