Recap / Friends S 9 E 4 The One With The Sharks

Go To

Phoebe worries that Mike won't want her if he discovers she's never had a serious relationship before. Ross tries to help by spinning a tale of a past relationship of Phoebe's to Mike. Monica visits Chandler in Tulsa, catches him masturbating and gets the impression that he is aroused by sharks. Joey has a date with a girl, but thinks he already slept with her when he sees her apartment and wonders why she can't remember.

Tropes:

  • All Men Are Perverts: The end credit scene draws a parallel between Phoebe and Joey as being the only two members of the group that just had assorted one-off escapades instead of long-term relationships. Whereas Phoebe became a mess over that possibly jeopardizing her newest relationship, Joey is actually quite content with just sleeping around.
  • Cactus Cushion: Joey pricks himself on a cactus in his date's apartment, not remembering that that's what cacti do until he tries touching it. He also accidentally backs up into it while analyzing the places where he's had sex before.
  • Caught with Your Pants Down: Monica walks in on Chandler clearly trying to hide that he was just masturbating to porn. He hastily changes the channel to one with a program on sharks, leading to Monica thinking that was what he was masturbating to.
  • Girl on Girl Is Hot: When clearing up the misunderstanding, Chandler says this is the kind of porn he was actually watching before hastily changing the channel. Monica is quite relieved.
  • Implied Death Threat: Gunther keeps laughing at Joey pretending he doesn't pick up women often while covering it as a cough. Joey is not amused.
Joey: Seriously Gunther you should see someone about that cold. If it gets any worse you could die.
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: A bizarre but fundamentally moving version of this; when Monica thinks that Chandler's turned on by sharks, she gets drunk and rents a movie about shark attacks to try and share the experience with him, with Chandler touched that she was willing to go through something like that for him even if he doesn't actually enjoy "shark porn".
  • Mythology Gag: Possibly. "Vikram" was the name of Ross's counterpart in the Indian remake.
  • Out of Focus: Rachel isn't given much to do in this episode, not even appearing until half-way through it. Though it's probably reasonable as the last several episodes have revolved around her and her baby.
  • Really Gets Around: Joey to the point of not being able to remember if he slept with his Girl of the Week before or not. In the end credit scene, he's about to hit on another random girl, only to realize he already did sleep with her.
  • Snowball Lie: Ross starts one off and Phoebe extends it when Ross tries to convince Mike that Phoebe's had a serious past relationship by creating 'Vikrum'; Ross starts off just naming him as Phoebe's ex-boyfriend of six years, and then claims that Vikrum was a freelance kite designer who once dated Oprah, with Phoebe continuing the story by claiming that Emma is Vikrum's daughter rather than Ross's, culminating in Ross calling Phoebe's apartment and putting on an accent to pose as Vikrum himself.
  • Your Makeup Is Running: By the time Mike arrives for their date Phoebe is such a weepy mess over Ross' comments that her makeup is completely ruined.
    Phoebe: How do I look?
Ross: (quietly) Do you have a compact in your purse?
    Phoebe: No.
    Ross: You look great!
  • Zip Me Up: Phoebe runs into Central Perk to ask Ross to zip up the back of her dress since she couldn't reach it and nobody she met between her apartment and the coffee house would help with it.
