Recap / Friends S 8 E 5 The One With Rachels Date

Go To

Phoebe dates a sous-chef who works for Monica, but things get awkward when she wants to break up with him at the same time that Monica wants to fire him. Rachel dates a co-star of Joey's; Ross feels put off by it as the father of her child. Chandler has problems with a guy at work constantly referring to him as "Toby".

Tropes:

  • Accidental Misnaming: Bob thinks Chandler's name is actually Toby. Chandler doesn't have the guts to correct him because too much time has passed. When Chandler tells his boss that he doesn't think Bob should get promoted, Bob gets angry at Chandler and vents to "Toby" about it, much to Chandler's discomfort. Instead of revealing the truth, Chandler agrees to trash his own office together with Bob.
  • Cannot Spit It Out: Chandler tries to tell Bob the truth about why his promotion was blocked, but he can't go through with it, first when Bob thinks "Toby" is just taking the blame, and second when he knows Bob will be angrier with him about it when he does find out.
  • Embarrassing Middle Name: Chandler's middle name "Muriel" is revealed. Ross and Rachel make fun of it.
Ross: "Chandler Muriel Bing". Boy, your parents never even gave you a chance, did they?
  • Heartbreak and Ice Cream: Rachel buys 20 chocolate bars to comfort herself when her date is a bust. After Ross gives her a pep talk she decides to only eat half of them.
  • Honor Before Reason: Chandler would rather help trash his own office than lose face by explaining the whole Toby thing to Bob.
  • Morton's Fork: Monica and Phoebe find themselves trying to essentially 'beat' the other when they want to fire and break up with the same person at once, as whoever acts first will have delivered the lesser blow to him. In the end, Monica agrees to give him another shot at the restaurant, but Phoebe still ends the relationship.
  • Swear Jar: Monica's staff at Alessandro's have apparently started a jar that she has to pay into whenever she yells.
  • Trauma Button: Rachel going on a date ends up really rattling Ross. The possibility of Rachel hooking up with some other guy makes him think of how he could once again end up having a child he doesn't get to take home.
