Recap / Friends S 7 E 3 The One With Phoebes Cookies

Go To

Monica wants Phoebe's grandmother's chocolate chip cookie recipe as a wedding present, but since it got destroyed in the apartment fire, they have to figure out the recipe on their own. Rachel teaches Joey how to sail his boat. Chandler tries to bond with Jack Geller, but they have an awkward moment.

Tropes:

  • Accidental Misnaming: Jack Geller apparently asked Ross to invite "Chauncey" to the country club. Ross decides to let Chandler deal with correcting him.
  • All Girls Like Ponies: Rachel casually says that her father gave her a boat to distract her from her sick pony.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Phoebe openly admits that while her grandmother was nice to her (although that's debatable given the way she lied to Phoebe about her birth father) she was horrible to other people and is definitely in hell.
  • Grandma's Recipe: Phoebe's grandmother supposedly made the best chocolate chip cookies ever. Monica endeavors to figure out the ingredients since the recipe was lost in the fire at Phoebe's apartment. After many failed attempts, they realize Phoebe's grandmother actually copied the recipe from NestlĂ© Toll House cookies.
  • Headbutting Heroes: Rachel and Joey end up getting into a heated argument over the former's aggressive teaching and the latter's struggle to remember things.
  • I Am Not My Father:
    • Rachel is not very patient with Joey while teaching him how to sail. She comes to the realization that she has spent her life trying so hard to not become like her mother, she never noticed the ways in which she was becoming like her father; he took a similar approach to sailing.
    • Played for Laughs in The Stinger, where Rachel enjoys the boat in Joey's manner; leaving it parked at the marina and enjoying beer and sandwiches. He gets on her case when she lets the contents of the sandwich fall. He's then horrified to realize he's acting like his own father.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Upon realizing she's been acting like her father, Rachel is very apologetic towards Joey.
  • Noodle Incident: When Joey accuses Rachel of being aggressive on the boat, Ross takes his side and talks about how insufferable she was on a boating trip when they were dating.
  • "Not So Different" Remark: Jack sympathizes with Chandler's concern about being embarrassed in front of in-laws, saying he was so flustered when meeting Judy's parents that he claimed to be a lawyer. To this day, he still gives Judy's family legal advice rather than deal with the awkwardness.
  • Ripple-Effect-Proof Memory: Chandler starts wearing glasses, but his friends claim they thought he's always worn them. They seem to remember at least one detail from "TO That Could Have Been".
  • "Shaggy Dog" Story: Monica goes to a lot of trouble to replicate Phoebe's grandmother's cookies, only to discover in the end that the much-vaunted recipe was totally copied from NestlĂ© Toll House cookies.
Phoebe: You see, it is stuff like this which is why you're BURNING IN HELL!
