Phoebe decides to change her surname, and upon learning she can pick anything, goes with "Princess Consuela Banana Hammock." Chandler and Monica show Joey their prospective house. Rachel applies for a job with Gucci, but finds her boss sitting at the next table.

Tropes:

  • The Bus Came Back: Mark reappears for the first time since "The One With the Tiny T-Shirt". It's been so long since his last appearance that Ross doesn't initially remember who he is.
  • Call-Back: After being reminded who Mark is, Ross once again becomes extremely jealous.
Chandler: …it's seven years ago. My time machine works!
  • Cardboard Box of Unemployment: Rachel is seen carrying one such box after leaving her job. While Ross is having trouble carrying one of her office's chairs.
  • Comic Sutra: Phoebe mentions there's something she's been trying to convince Mike to try in the bedroom, but he won't go for it. She whispers what it is to Joey, causing him to jump up and run out of Central Perk yelling that he will not help persuade Mike to do whatever it is.
  • Cute Ghost Girl: Joey has a chat with the girl who is moving out of the house. When he tells Chandler and Monica, Chandler messes with him by saying that there was a little girl who lived there, but she died thirty years ago.
Joey: That's not funny! You know I'm afraid of little girl ghosts!
  • Foreshadowing: At the end of the episode, Joey calls the little girl for career advice, asking if he should try to do more movies. This foreshadows the spin-off that Joey would get.
  • Global Ignorance: Joey is worried about Chandler and Monica moving away because the house is in escrow. "I can't even find it on the map!"
  • Inherently Funny Word: Phoebe chooses "Banana Hammock" as her new last name because it's a funny-sounding word. When Mike presses her she admits she doesn't actually know what it means, forcing him to tell her that it's another name for a Speedo.
  • Innocently Insensitive: After Rachel gets fired and fails to get the job at Gucci, Ross comes into the coffee house boasting that he has gotten tenure in front of her.
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: Mackenzie, the little girl at the house Chandler and Monica want to buy, convinces Joey that he should let his friends buy the house, even if it's far away from him, because it makes them happy.
  • The Maiden Name Debate: Phoebe's storyline. When she asks a clerk which way she should double-barrel, and is told her new name can be literally anything, she decides to go with Princess Consuela Banana Hammock. At the end of the episode, she settles on Buffay-Hannigan.
    • When Phoebe asks Monica how she changed her name Monica finally admits she never actually changed her name to "Bing". Chandler starts to complain before remembering how embarrassing he's always found the name.
Chandler: Ah, who am I kidding? Let's call the kid Geller and let Bing die with me.
  • Not Now, Kiddo: As Ross starts to brag about how he got tenure, Phoebe tries to warn him about Rachel getting fired, but Ross dismisses her. After he finds out, he tells Phoebe "A little warning would have been nice."
  • Special Guest: Brent Spiner as the interviewer from Gucci that Rachel meets with.
  • The Triple: In the opening, Chandler, Monica, Phoebe, and Mike are having dinner when Ross comes in and says he's up for tenure. Then Rachel comes in and says she's been approached by a headhunter for a new job. Finally Joey comes in and says he got out a seed that was stuck in his teeth.
  • Wham Line: Rachel starts to say that Mark got her a new job that pays a lot better. The one flaw?
    "The job is in Paris."
