Recap / Fresh Off The Boat S 2 E 20 Hi My Name Is

Go To

As Evan prepares to open his first bank account and sign his first official document, he agonizes over which name to use: his Chinese name or his American name. He is not satisfied with Jessica's reason for choosing his American name (the nurse who helped deliver him had the last name "Evans"), nor do Jessica's or Louis' stories about how they chose their own American names help. In the end, Grandma Huang convinces Evan that the name he was given is not important; it is what you do in life to make that name important that matters.

  • The Cameo: Jalen Rose as "Cool Louis", a cool guy that inspires Louis to take the same name in order to become cooler. Busta Rhymes and Shaquille O'Neal also play themselves in Eddie's Imagine Spot.
  • Evil Teacher: Jessica had a teacher intentionally refused to call on her in class despite her eagerness because he refused to learn how to pronounce her name. When she confronted him, he told her she was better off changing it before having to deal with similar-minded people, which she accepted.
  • Gender-Blender Name: Jessica admits that her original American name was "Bob", after her favorite haircut, before realizing it was seen as a masculine name and changing it to a song from The Allman Brothers Band.
  • The Illegible: Evan's signature is completely illegible, though Jessica is excited because it resembles a doctor's shorthand.
  • Imagine Spot: Eddie is less concerned about his "current" name as he is about his "future" name, and we see him rebranding himself after becoming a famous rapper and fashion designer that works with Busta Rhymes and U.S. President Shaq.
  • Sticky Fingers: We see in The Tag that Grandma Jenny Huang got her American name when she had to fill out a library card to check out some Garfield books, which she never returned before leaving the state and are still sitting on her bedside table.
  • Unfortunate Names: In her past classes, Jessica learned about a soda company that was originally branded as "Butte Juice" (as it was made in Butte, Montana), and got better sales after rebranding to something that didn't resemble "Butt Juice".
  • The Unreveal: We're never shown what name Evan chooses...at least, not legibly.
