Recap / Frasier S 05 E 23 Party Party

Go To

Frasier keeps trying to arrange a date with a young woman he met at the opera, but something always upsets his plans. On her last night in Seattle she agrees to meet him—but it's Frasier's birthday and he must escape from his own surprise party. Meanwhile, Niles preens over his new relationship with Frasier's attractive neighbor Allison until he discovers that she's married to a gun-crazy big-game hunter.

Tropes:

  • Bad Date: Frasier and Tricia finally get their date when he offers to drive her all the way to Spokane. Unfortunately this is when he finds out that she’s a door-to-door Evangelical who likes country music, shares none of his interests, and is intent on preaching to him “the truth.”
  • Break the Haughty: Niles puffs himself up like a resurrected Casanova after he gets involved with Allison, then finds out in quick succession that (1) she only seduced him to get revenge on her cheating husband; and (2) she's done the same with over a dozen other men.
  • Danger Deadpan: Niles seems remarkably calm upon learning that his new girlfriend is (a) married, and (b) to a gun-crazy, violently jealous big game hunter. Of course, then he starts hyperventilating.
Niles: Here's something interesting: I think I just swallowed my tongue.
  • Hypocrite: Averted with Karl. He takes Allison announcing that she’s cheating on him quite well, then when he finds out she’s slept her way through the entire Safari Club he just remarks that she’s almost as bad as him and gets everyone drinks.
  • Informed Attribute: Karl is apparently horribly short tempered, earning him the nickname “Rhino,” but the worst we see out of him is a sarcastic comment when Frasier almost makes him spill his drink. Otherwise he comes off as incredibly even-tempered and friendly, albeit a bit gruff.
  • It Makes Sense in Context: "Frasier, I have to ask a small favor. I need you to create a distraction while I have a sex change and move to Europe."
  • Masochist's Meal: The Tag has Niles trying something that looks like a giant worm. He’s so disgusted that he pulls it back out of his mouth and puts it back, and wipes his tongue off.
  • Revenge Romance: What Niles finds out his promising new relationship with Allison was.
  • "Shaggy Dog" Story: Frasier and Tricia aren’t cut out for each other, Allison is just using Niles to get back at her husband, and it’s not clear whether their efforts to get into the Safari Club go anywhere.
  • Sympathetic Adulterer: Allison is sleeping with Niles as a way of getting back at her cheating husband Karl. Of course she isn’t very sympathetic from Niles’ perspective, since Karl is a rather frightening guy, and the sheer volume of men she’s cheated with undermines it a bit.
