♫ Let me be your song! ♫
The Fraggles meet Cantus and the Minstrels, who wander the Rock, looking for Fraggles to sing medleys. Cantus tells Red that she and her friends have been chosen to sing a medley, and that she will be the leader, if each and every one of them finds his own song. They each manage to do this... except Red, who, after hearing Cantus' magic pipe play the songs her friends have found, is sure her song is in the pipe as well. Since Cantus won't let her play it, telling her, "A song must never be played to be in order to be heard", Red makes up her mind to "borrow" the pipe.

That night, while the Minstrels are asleep, Red takes the pipe and tries to play it—but it begins playing on its own, sticking to her hand and dragging her to the Gorgs' garden, where Junior nearly thumps her. When it comes unstuck, she runs back to the Rock, only to find that the pipe has magically left a mysterious mark on her hand.

The next morning, Cantus gathers the Fraggles together and asks who took the pipe. Red confesses her theft. Cantus saves her from being thumped by Junior when she goes to retrieve it. Not long after, the mark disappears as Red finds her song.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Anaphora: Cantus uses the phrase "that's where you're" at the beginning of two phrases in a row, after telling Red that a song must never be played to be heard.
Red: But everybody's song must be in that pipe!
Cantus: That's where you're right... and that's where you're wrong.
  • Big Finale Crowd Song: The Fraggle Rock segment of this episode ends with "Our Melody", sung by Red, Mokey, Gobo, and Wembley once they have all found their songs. Cantus joins in, followed by Murray and Balsam, followed by the others in the Great Hall. Even Boober, who had declined to join the medley because he wasn't sure he could find his song, is drawn by the music and stands at the entrance to the Great Hall, singing his own song.
  • Borrowed Without Permission: Red decides to take Cantus' magic pipe to find out what her song is. She tells Mokey this isn't stealing but borrowing.
  • Bullet Dancing: Or club dancing. Invoked by Junior when he swings his club at Red.
Junior: Come on, Fraggle! I wanna see you dance! Now, dance! [Starts swinging his club at Red, trying to thump her.] Dance, little Fraggle! Dance, I say!
  • Cryptic Conversation: Cantus tends to engage in this.
Murray: Hey, boss, you sure know how to pick your medley leaders.
Cantus: I don't pick 'em. They pick themselves.
Murray: Yeah, but this one? We could be here for days!
Cantus: She'll find her song, in time.
Murray: In time for tomorrow's medley?
Cantus: She has a long way to go, though the journey is short. The medley will not start without her. [Walks off.]
Murray: Did he answer my question?
[Balsam nods. Brio shakes her head. Brool shrugs.]
    Murray: That's what I thought.
  • Distinction Without a Difference: When Red tells Mokey her plan to take the pipe...
Red: I'll give it right back after I get it to play my song.
Mokey: But, Red...! Red, Red... that's stealing!
Red: It's not stealing. It's borrowing.
  • Distinguishing Mark: A temporary—and magical—example. The pipe, after it drags Red to the Gorgs' garden and comes unstuck, leaves a glowing mark on the palm of her hand. Cantus uses this mark to determine who took the pipe. The mark disappears after Red retrieves the pipe and finds her song.
Cantus: [to the assembled Fraggles] Whoever took the pipe will bear this mark.
[He holds up his hand. A mark identical to Red's appears on his palm.]
Mokey: [whispering to Red] Lucky that I found her.
    Red: Shhh!
Cantus: This mark is the pipe's magic way of saying, "Mnh-mnh!"
  • Entertainingly Wrong: Uncle Matt thinks mannequins in a store window are Silly Creatures practicing a new form of meditation by staying completely still. He joins them in the window, deciding to try it himself. Six hours later, he feels "a marvelous sense of exhilaration" as an employee grabs him and tosses him out the door.
  • Face Your Fears: Red faces her fear of Junior to retrieve the pipe from the Gorgs' garden, where she had dropped it.
[Red and Cantus emerge from the entrance to the Gorgs' garden. Junior is standing with his back to them, raking.]
Red: [whispering] I dropped it over there. [Points.]
Cantus: Then you must go over there and get it.
Red: But... but the Gorg will kill me!
    Cantus: Says who?
    Red: But... but...!
[Cantus points in the direction of the pipe. Red, Quaking with Fear, starts toward it.]
Junior: [noticing Red] Oho! I'll get you this time, little Fraggle! [Starts toward her.]
    Red: No!
    Cantus: Pipe, play Gorg music!
[The pipe begins to play a bouncy version of "Let Me Be Your Song". Junior, forgetting about Red, gets into the beat and begins to dance. Red, meanwhile, grabs the pipe.]
Red: [gazing at the pipe in awe] Wow! [She glances up at the dancing Junior, then runs offscreen.]
  • Help, I'm Stuck!: When Red takes the pipe and tries playing it, it begins to play the instrumental beginning of "Let Me Be Your Song" on its own, then sticks to her hand, dragging her to the Gorgs' garden. On top of that, it won't stop playing, alerting Junior to her presence and to that of Mokey, who is trying in vain to get her unstuck.
Red: It won't stop! And it's pulling me!
  • Hide the Evidence: Not long after Red's hand is marked by the pipe, the medley is about to start.
Red: I'm gonna be mortified! Oh, Mokey, what am I gonna do about my hand?
Mokey: Um... uh... put it in my pocket. [Puts Red's hand in her pocket.] Come on.
    Red: Good idea!
  • Hymn to Music: When Cantus first enters, he starts to sing "Let Me Be Your Song", all about the wonders of music.
Cantus: [singing] Music grows in the rose,
Rock and rain and the blowin' snowstorm.
Everything seems to sing, everywhere I go.

Cantus and Murray: I say, one, two, play me, do.
Let me sound as sweet as you.
Play me wide, play me long.
    Let me be your song!
  • It Was with You All Along: Cantus explaining to Red that her song was inside her all along, not in the pipe.
  • Magical Flutist:
    • When Cantus is first seen playing the pipe, flowers start to open.
    • When Red goes to retrieve the pipe, Junior tries to thump her again. Cantus tells the pipe to play Gorg music, and the song makes Junior dance, distracting him long enough for Red to get the pipe.
  • Mass "Oh, Crap!": Everyone else in the Great Hall, when Cantus announces that someone took the pipe.
  • Not So Stoic: Cantus, throughout the episode, is as calm as can be, but he starts to lose his patience with Red when she keeps insisting she doesn't have a song.
Cantus: I fear I'm losing my implacable calm...!
  • Oh, Crap!: Red, when the pipe, refusing to stop playing, drags her to the Gorgs' garden, where Junior spots her.
  • Playing Sick: After Red's hand is marked by the pipe, she tries to get out of the medley by claiming she has laryngitis. It fails.
  • Signature Instrument: Cantus' pipe.
Mokey: Where did you get that pipe?
Cantus: My pipe is a magic pipe. It was made especially for me many, many, many days ago by a mysterious and invisible... a mysterious and invisible...
Red: A mysterious and invisible what?
Cantus: I don't know. It was so mysterious and invisible.
  • There Are No Rules: Cantus' answer when Red asks about the rules of the medley.
Red: So what are the rules?
Cantus: There are no rules, and those are the rules.
    Red: [confused] Gotcha.
  • True Companions: When Mokey, covering for Red, pretends to have taken the pipe, Red immediately confesses.
[The other Fraggles, after Mokey's '"confession", all gasp and begin talking at once.]
Fraggle #1: I should have guessed!
    Red: Wait a minute!
    [The other Fraggles keep talking.]
    Red: Listen to me! LOOK!
[She holds up her hand, revealing the mark. The Fraggles all gasp again.]
    Cantus: So, it was you.
    Red: You mean you knew?
Cantus: You were the one who didn't know.
  • Walking the Earth: The Minstrels wander the Rock, looking for Fraggles to sing medleys.
  • Wandering Minstrel: Cantus and the other Minstrels, who wander the Rock.
  • Wham Line: Cantus wakes up long enough to give one that makes the pipe come unstuck.
    Cantus: Be still, pipe.
  • Who Would Be Stupid Enough?: Gobo says this after Cantus announces that someone took the pipe.
Gobo: Aww, who would be dumb enough to take that pipe?
Red: [quickly] Yeah, what a stupid thing to do!
