Recap / Final Space S 3 E 2 The Hidden Light

Go To

Immediately following the previous episode, Gary, Quinn, HUE, and KVN go to the Earth in search for a ship. Meanwhile, Avocato and the others are taken in by the Arachnitects.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Apocalypse How: Earth being pulled into Final Space caused catastrophic damage to Earth's ecosystem and seems to have screwed up its gravity, and most of the indigenous life, human or otherwise, has been wiped out. Upon arriving, Gary and Quinn witness a mass of human corpses and other objects floating around. Survivors of the disaster include Kevin Van Newton, Biskit and a group of KVN robots.
  • The Bus Came Back: The Lord Commander returns and effortlessly mops the floor on the three Arachnitects.
  • Cloud Cuckoolander: Kevin's gotten quite a bit loopy due to spending several months in isolation on the ruined Earth with only Biskit and the KVNs to keep him company. Slightly downplayed in case of the three Arachnitects that Avocato's group stumbles upon; while they're initially paranoid and on the edge, they calm down once they realize that their new prisoners aren't allied with Invictus and actually know one of their fellow Arachnitects, Jeremy.
  • Continuity Nod: With a touch of Brick Joke as we finally learn what happen to all those transmissions Gary sent to Quinn.
  • Cool Sword: Bolo wields a gigantic sword forged out of a dwarf star at the end of the episode. Its glowing green blade sports a floating gemstone near the middle.
  • Cruel and Unusual Death: Lord Commander causes two of the Arachnitects to painfully burst and explode into flames, and the third one is crushed into nothingness.
  • Damned by Faint Praise: One of the Arachnitects mentions how fond he is of Jeremy (another Arachnitect who the protagonists met in the main universe)... while stating how he's absolutely incompetent and expressing surprise that he wasn't fired yet.
  • Faux Horrific: Gary makes a real big song and dance of being surrounded by KVNs and their creator.
Gary: I know it'd end like this! Oh, being tortured in a European hellscape by a demon horde of KVNs! Roll out the sleeping bag...I'm ready for the big nap!
    (later)
Gary: Quinn...I've finally found him...the father of Beezlebub. This house must be cleansed with FIRE. We gotta burn it to the ground, Quinn! We gotta burn it to the ground!
  • Forging Scene: At the very end of the episode, Bolo and Mooncake are shown creating a sword out of a dwarf star, which Bolo intends to use to kill Oreskis and the rest of the Titans.
  • Gone Mad From The Isolation: Months of isolation with only Biskit and the KVNs around have taken a serious toll on poor Kevin.
  • Kick the Dog: The Lord Commander comes in and suddenly kills the last Arachnitects in Final Space.
  • Legacy Vessel Naming: Quinn names the newly built ship Galaxy Two, as successor to Galaxy One from the first season of the show.
  • The Remnant: It's revealed in this episode that the Arachnitects sent hundreds of their own kind into Final Space when it was first created, to act as sentries, but the Titans since broke through their barriers and wiped all but three of them out. The Lord Commander kills those last three Arachnitects when he comes back.
  • The Reveal: Nightfall had asked for the creation of a ship six years prior to Gary and Quinn arriving on the Earth.
  • Stab the Sky: Bolo in the ending pulls off this pose with the newly-forged Titanslayer sword, holding it pointing proverbially skyward above his head in space.
  • Wham Episode: The Lord Commander is back, and attacks Avocato's team to find info on Mooncake.
  • Wham Line: An off-screen groan in this case, to signal that the three Arachnitects are getting killed one by one by a certain antagonistic being making his grand re-entry.
  • Wham Shot: Who else should appear to destroy the Arachnitects and establish there is no particularly safe spot within Final Space to hide in but the Lord Commander, having somehow returned from the brink.
