Recap / Final Space S 2 E 11 The Set Up

Go To

A member of the Crimson Light betrays the team by stealing two of the dimensional keys. Meanwhile, Mooncake and HUE have a day out on the town.

Tropes:

  • Accidental Hero: H.U.E. and Mooncake are declared heroes by the Darga Space Port police for retreiving the loot from the Zirdoninix Robbery, while in reality they were tricked by Ziznack to fight the gang that stole the loot, and only tried to escape with their lives.
  • Alien Blood: Fox is revealed to have purple blood when Clarence injures him.
  • Ass Shove: KVN is implied to have gone through something of the sort when the team squad were visting the strip-club, and later sticks his own claw up his ass to remove a piece of his own hardware, to save Fox's life.
  • Asshole Victim: After Clarence gives Sheryl the dimensional keys she cuts him loss without anything in return. When Gary, Little Cato, and Nightfall catch up Clarence tells them where Sheryl is going and is left behind by them, leaving him with nothing and nobody. This would be bad for anyone else, but Clarence has been throughly established as a jerkass scammer who already tried ditching Gary and the others several times previously, and betrayed everyone he knew just because he felt he was not being given enough attention.
  • Cover Innocent Eyes and Ears: Gary does this to Little Cato and Nightfall does it to Ash when the building Clarence sent them to turns out to be a brothel.
  • Darkest Hour: The dimensional keys are stolen from under the Crimson Light's nose, and Fox gets nearly killed.
  • Disproportionate Reward: When H.U.E. and Mooncake give the stolen 10,000 dropnoids to the police, they are rewarded with medals and a 50,000 dropnoids reward. H.U.E. lampshades how the reward far exceeds the original stolen amount, but the police brush it off as their failing economy. To top it all off, H.U.E. is also given the hat he wanted to buy in the first place as part of the reward.
  • Fictional Holiday: Clarence created a fictional holiday that let other heaps praise on him (it backfired as even his children decided to give praise to other members of the crew).
  • Heroic Sacrifice: A non-fatal example. KVN gives up his computer chip to save Fox's life at the cost of going insane.
  • Hero Stole My Bike: Gary, Nightfall and Little Cato steal a flying animal named Chucky to chase Clarence. Gary promises Chucky's owner they will bring him back. Naturally, they forget; something Little Cato already predicted.
  • Impact Silhouette: H.U.E. makes one when he jumps through a window to get away from a gunfight.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Clarence is visibly horrified to learn that his attack on Fox nearly killed him.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Sheryl scoffs at Clarence's attempts at claiming that they were both the same by pointing out that he willingly gave everything up.
  • The Reveal: Hilariously subverted. It turns out that Clarence was wearing a skin suit the whole time and is actually a snake rat! ....or some sort of alien fly, then it turns out that Clarence was wearing several skin suits this whole time and is actually the same person as he was at first.
  • Rewarded as a Traitor Deserves: Clarence's betrayal of the crew is ultimately met in turn with betrayal by Sheryl, who strung him along to begin with by preying on his need for validation after even his own adopted kids declined to stroke his ego, only to take the dimensional keys for herself, rightfully pointing out along the way that acting on his own volition left him with nothing or no one. Gary accordingly then tells him to get fucked for stealing the keys and nearly killing Fox before leaving him behind for good.
  • Robot Combat: H.U.E. participates in one named Battle Royal to win the 10,000 dropnoids he needs to buy a hat.
  • Series Continuity Error: When KVN remembers several fond memories of Ash and Fox from previous episodes, he remembers them fighting the Mega-KVN with him apparently being one of the KVNs part of it. He was not part of the Mega-KVN, nor was he there when they fought it. Something KVN even lampshades.
  • Throw the Dog a Bone: This happens to H.U.E. in his storyline of the episode. After spending the season up to now humiliated due to his lackluster body, he is praised as a hero for returning the stolen money, given a ridiculously huge prize, and gets the hat he wanted to buy for free, which even A.V.A. compliments him on. He basically gets the best outcome out of all the main characters this episode.
  • Underdogs Never Lose: H.U.E. is hilariously outclashed by the other robots participating in the Battle Royal, as they are all bigger, stronger and better armed than him. This however works to his advantage, as they completely ignore him and end up taking each other out, leaving H.U.E. as the only robot standing, and thus by default the winner.
  • Unobtainium: Tritanium, the rare metal A.V.A. needs to help Fox after what Clarence did to him. KVN is forced to sacrifice his falanger, which is made of Tritanium, to provide A.V.A. with some.
  • Wham Episode: The crew decides to leave Clarence behind once and for all as punishment for stealing the dimensional keys to schmooze up to Sheryl, even nearly (albeit accidentally) killing Fox to that end. As they depart the space port and assess the low point they're in, the episode ends on Sheryl communicating with a Titan she's made a deal with to see her beloved husband again in exchange for the keys.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Little Cato and Gary call Nightfall out for punching Chucky's owner.
