Recap / Final Space S 1 E 9 Chapter 9

Go To

Gary and the crew return to New York to find an antimatter bomb that can be vital to fight Lord Commander.

Tropes:

  • Apocalypse Wow: As the Galaxy One arrives on Earth, the effects of the breach are already taking their toll on the planet — the oceans are being sucked up into space, and we see that it's raining constantly and New York is largely in ruins. Near the end of the episode, New York's infrastructure begins tearing up and lifting into the sky from the breach's gravity, there are multiple tremors, and magma starts pouring into the streets and out of the Earth's crust on a global scale. All whilst "When the Night is Long" plays solemnly. Have a look.
  • Aw, Look! They Really Do Love Each Other: Quinn finally begins to fall for Gary’s attempts to court her; she accepts a shot of liquor from him, and they keep exchanging looks or taking each other’s hands.
  • Big Applesauce: The majority of the episode is set in a dilapidated New York City.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Tribore saves Gary and Quinn during their Darkest Hour (see below).
  • Boom, Headshot!: Gary kills a corrupt Infinity Guard member Quinn missed shooting at this way.
  • Cannot Spit It Out: Gary hates KVN so much he truly can’t bring himself to compliment the robot, even if KVN genuinely did something good. Even giving KVN a thumbs up causes him agony.
  • Casual Danger Dialogue: Gary asks Quinn out for a drink while they are in the middle of fighting the Infinity Guard. Quinn points out Gary should focus on the fight first.
  • Cliffhanger: By the episode’s end, the protagonists have the anti-matter bomb, but time is running out and the Lord Commander arrives with a large armada.
  • Comically Missing the Point: Gary, per usual. When the Galaxy One collides with multiple sea turtles (since the oceans are being sucked into space), Gary thinks they are under attack from Ninja Sea Turtles. HUE points out they simply ended up in a school of the creatures, which Gary thinks means these Ninja Turtles are literally still in school.
  • Darkest Hour: The protagonists find the antimatter bomb is gone, all files about it have been deleted so HUE can’t track it down, and then more Infinity Guard soldiers arrive, taking out the KVN-bots, trapping Mooncake in a forcefield, and preparing to execute Gary and Quinn on the spot. Gary even moans how it’s over now.
  • Homeworld Evacuation: When the Galaxy One reaches New York, HUE points out the Earth has been mostly abandoned already.
  • Imperial Stormtrooper Marksmanship Academy: At the shootout in the entrance of the Infinity Guard Spire, The Team Squad manages to gun down every singly infinity guard member present while only suffering the casualty of one SAMES robot. While Quinn and Little Cato almost get shot, Gary and Mooncake respectively prevent this.
  • La Résistance: It turns out not all Infinity Guard members are corrupt; those who refused to join the Lord Commander have formed a rebel group. Lead by none other than Tribore.
  • Lava Adds Awesome: While Gary has to rescue Quinn (who has been knocked out by a rock) under water, magma starts to break through the Earth’s crust due to the breach. As Gary, Quinn and Mooncake try to reach the surface, streams of lava shoot out of the walls around them, instantly solidifying into glowing hot rock spires. At one point, Mooncake uses his powers to blast a way through such a lava stream.
  • Let's Get Dangerous!: The SAMES modified the ships tools into weapons, and are all dressed up for combat. Too bad they are still very much Red Shirts.
    • Little Cato is the first one to defiantly side with Mooncake in response to the Lord Commander's demand for the Galaxy One crew's surrender, though he quickly realizes the gravity of the battle they're about to get caught up in after the former signs off and sends in his armada.
  • Mook–Face Turn: Played for laughs; once KVN shows up in his mech suit, all the other suits they were fighting are revealed to be piloted by KVNs too, who all happily greet the main KVN. KVN then tells the others not to shoot at them, but shoot the Infinity Guard soldiers instead. The other KVNs all happily agree, saying "anything for a KVN", and kill the Infinity Guard soldiers for the heroes.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Gary discovers that instead of a regular dose of aspirin, he gave the Infinity Guard Pilot whom he Mugged for Disguise an overdose of crylenol (apparently a sort of potent sedative). Hence why he has been asleep for the past five years. Gary criticizes himself in the mirror for what he has done.
  • Never Recycle a Building: Gary and Quinn's mission takes them back to the bar in New York where they first met 5 years earlier. Much to Gary’s surprise and dismay, the Infinity Guard pilot whom he mugged and drugged for his uniform back then, is still right where he left him, now thin like a skeleton and with a beard. Gary wonders why nobody found and helped him during the past 5 years.
  • Now You Tell Me: It turns out all this time, KVN had an Infinity Guard Mech Suit in the Galaxy One. Gary naturally can’t believe KVN didn’t tell him sooner he had it.
  • Race Against the Clock: The protagonists have six hours left to find the anti-matter bomb and close the breach.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: KVN opts out of helping the others find the bomb. At first. He changes his mind later and joins the battle with his mech suit.
  • Shoot Out the Lock: Gary does this to open the doors to the bomb vault.
  • Stay with Me Until I Die: In the cold opening, when Gary only has a minute of oxygen left, Gary asks HUE to stay with him until the timer runs out. HUE assures him that he will stay with him until the bitter end.
  • Troubled Fetal Position: In the cold opening, Gary has assumed this pose (though most likely more because of the cold than despair).
