Season 8, Episode 6

Morgan’s deteriorating sanity poises as much of a risk to his allies and enemies as Ben and Sam’s endgame.

  • Black-and-White Insanity: The prefects refuse to go back with their parents since they’ve bought into the Krennick’s Kool-Aid about PADRE’s way of life. That said, they lose their nerve when Ben and Dove demand they execute their own parents.
  • Book Ends: Morgan’s first and final episodes of Fear revolve heavily around Rick Grimes’s last words to him about not running from people.
  • The Bus Came Back: Troy Otto is the person in possession of Strand’s glasses, Alicia’s arm, and Madison’s hammer at the end of the episode.
  • But Now I Must Go: Having made peace with his losses and regained Mo, Morgan decides to leave to return to Alexandria and the people he left behind.
  • Character Death: Shrike allows herself to be bitten on the neck by her reanimated father. Later, Finch succumbs to his walker bite.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • The title of the episode is taken from one of Morgan’s deranged rants from "Clear". He leaves more of his graffiti, this time stating "Grace turned" instead of "Duane turned".
    • The title sequence brings back many of the characters Morgan has met and befriended during his time in the franchise. Notably, Eastman is among those who appear, having previously been a one-off character in the Walking Dead episode "Here’s Not Here." He sees many of them again in a brief montage at the end of the episode.
    • Morgan quotes Rick Grimes to Mo, from when he advised him that he can’t run from his pain.
    • Daniel says he knows what it’s like to be a brainwashed young revolutionary, recalling his youth working in a Panamanian revolution.
    • Morgan recalls his words from when he entered the series, "I lose people, and I lose myself."
    • Morgan buries Grace in the graveyard that was owned by Eastman, whose grave he also visits.
    • Morgan recalls his previous journey to find Rick during Season 5 of the main show.
    • Morgan begins making regular messages to Rick over the radio at dawn just like Rick did back in the main show’s first season.
  • Despair Event Horizon: The death of Finch convinces Dwight and Sherry that they weren’t meant to be together, and they decide to divorce.
  • The Dragon: Dove is the only prefect who demonstrates unblinking loyalty to PADRE’s corrupted mission.
  • Dying Wish: Finch requests a painless death for Shrike, stating that no one should have to feel what he's feeling.
  • End of an Age: Morgan Jones’s time as the protagonist of Fear the Walking Dead ends as he and Mo leave to return to Alexandria, with the focus returning to Madison.
  • Foregone Conclusion: Morgan intends to try to reunite with Rick at Alexandria if he’s still there. At this point in the timeline, Rick is currently a prisoner of the Civic Republic Military and only a select few Coalition members know he’s still alive after his apparent death in Season 9.
  • Hallucinations: Morgan suffers them repeatedly throughout the episode.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Morgan convinces Ben and the prefects to stand down and spare their parents.
  • Lack of Empathy: Dove and the prefects have no empathy when they come face to face with their parents again, claiming they’re wasting their time. However, the prefects besides Dove eventually do lose their nerve and are unwilling to comply with the order to execute them.
  • Lampshade Hanging: Morgan lampshades that he thought he was past "Clear" Morgan after the events of "King County".
  • Laser-Guided Karma: June narrowly avoids giving Shrike a slow, painful death at the hands of a walker head. Even then, she still dies at the hands of her reanimated father whose mission she corrupted into a revolting child trafficking and brainwashing operation.
  • Once More, with Clarity: Morgan revisits Eastman’s “all life is precious” mantra, but has revamped it to not be about Thou Shalt Not Kill, but about appreciating all the time you have with your loved ones.
  • Outliving One's Offspring: Finch dies of his walker bite, leaving his parents Dwight and Sherry devastated.
  • Passing the Torch: Or rather, passing the torch back. Morgan leaves the show and returns the mantle of The Hero to Madison, the previous lead before his arrival.
  • Put on a Bus: Morgan decides to leave to return to Alexandria, and takes Mo with him.
  • Revisiting the Roots: With Morgan’s departure, the show returns to a member of the Clark family as the lead character for its final run of episodes.
  • Sanity Slippage: Morgan is back in prime form after the death of Grace and Mo’s abandonment of him.
  • Smug Snake: Shrike finally breaks her smug calm when she learns Morgan has her father’s walker at her mercy, and later is frantic and ultimately succumbs to despair finding him, not even trying to protect herself.
  • Sole Survivor: Ben is left as the last survivor of his family after Sam is killed by their reanimated father.
  • Wham Episode: PADRE is defeated and reformed under Madison’s leadership, and she resumes her mantle as the show’s lead character now that Morgan and Mo have left to return to Alexandria. Dwight and Sherry divorce after the death of Finch. Finally, Troy Otto is revealed to be alive and in possession of Madison’s hammer, Strand’s sunglasses and Alicia’s prosthetic arm.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: As of this mid-season finale, the whereabouts of group members Victor Strand, Sarah and Wendell Rabinowitz, Josiah LaRoux, Jacob Kessner, Luciana, and Charlie are still unknown (Charlie had a terminal diagnosis last we saw her, but she is conspicuously not mentioned to have explicitly perished).
  • What You Are in the Dark: When their parents are at their mercy, the prefects ultimately are unable to comply with orders to murder them.
