Recap / Family Ties S 1 E 14 The Fugitive 1

Go To

(Part 1 of 2). Elyse's younger brother Uncle Ned (played by Tom Hanks) has come to visit the Keatons, claiming he is burnt out from work and needs a break, despite already having another vacation a few months prior. Ned's strange behaviour raises suspicion and questions among the family members until they receive a visit from the FBI...

Examples:

  • Annoying Younger Sibling: Averted. Elyse and Ned are shown to have a good relationship, although it is implied that Steven feels that Ned acts childishly.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: Bert Calryle, the FBI agent sent to arrest Ned.
  • Cliffhanger: Ends with the reveal that Ned has embezzled four million dollars from his former company.
  • Code Name: When Steven receives a phone call asking for a Stanislaw Demkowski, Ned claims he booked his flights under that name to avoid his company harassing him with queries while on vacation. Results in this exchange:
Ned: May I use your phone for a second? Quick business call?
Steven: Certainly, Stanislaw. After all, you are a guest in our country.
  • Cool Uncle: Uncle Ned, who is clearly a favourite among all three Keaton children.
  • Out-of-Character Moment: An in-universe example, as Uncle Ned's erratic behaviour and vague answers attracts suspicion from the Keatons as to his real reason for visiting.
  • Spy Speak: Ned uses this during one of his suspicious phone calls, much to the confusion of the Keatons.
Ned: The falcon has landed. The fat man walks alone. I repeat, the falcon has landed, and the fat man walks alone.
  • Trial Balloon Question: Steven asks FBI agent Carlyle what would "hypothetically" happen if they were caught lying to the FBI about Ned's whereabouts. Carlyle's response does nothing to ease his worries:
Carlryle: I guess...Uh, hypothetically speaking, that you would be hypothetically arrested for harboring a known criminal and hypothetically be sent to a very real jail.
    Steven: I see.
