Appeal

When three prosecutors are assassinated outside a bar in their small Arkansas town, the team is called in to determine if this was a personal vendetta; Ray feels compelled to help a woman and her young son combat an injustice.

Recap:

  • A Day in the Limelight: Ray.
  • Angry White Man: Judge Howard Roarke.
  • Bald of Evil: Roarke is bald.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Ray reveals to Hana how he grew up enduring bigotry and prejudice as a black man.
  • Domestic Abuse: When the team speaks with Roarke's ex-wife Cynthia, she reveals bruises she received from him.
  • Karmic Death: Roarke is a bigoted Angry White Man targeting those he held responsible for ruining his chances for a higher judicial post. He gets killed via Boom, Headshot! by a black state trooper.
  • Kill and Replace: Roarke kills a hospital technician named Chip Fox to steal the latter's ID so he can kill Governor Nancy Novak. They both look alike (bald Caucasian men in their early 50s with hazel eyes) so Chip's coworkers were none the wiser when Roarke appeared in Chip's place with a face mask and Chip's glasses.
  • Killed Offscreen: Skip Hardy and Chip Fox were both killed by Roarke off-screen.
  • Straight Gay: The hacker Samuel Grey has a boyfriend named Eric.
  • The Resenter: Roarke is angry that his former law school classmates and colleagues have worked their way up to higher judicial offices while he was stuck on circuit court bench. As revealed by his former colleague and friend Arthur Hobbs, Roarke had applied for an open vacancy at the Arkansas Court of Appeals, but was denied due to JNE (Judicial Nominees Evaluation) surveys revealing allegations of sexual harassment, bribes, and improper bias. Instead of taking responsibility, Roarke took his rage out on the people he thinks halted his success because of their own.
