While Allison goes on maternity leave, Tess is in charge of GD. A giant ice core is delivered to GD and quickly starts causing trouble.

- Amicable Exes: Jo and Taggart are friendly despite some tension over his leaving town without saying goodbye, and Jo is briefly convinced their remaining friendly is the reason for Zane's cold behaviour. Taggart tells Jo it's important to him that they remain friends.
- Explain, Explain... Oh, Crap!: After Carter realises the insulated Arctic gear Zane is wearing acted as fertiliser for the fungus, he remembers what Fargo said earlier about the stuff being used throughout Eureka.
- Gut Feeling: Zoe decides to trust hers. She wants to be a doctor, but a career aptitude test shows that she would be best suited for robotics. After her instincts save everyone in Cafe Diem, she decides to be a doctor after all.
- O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Zane acts strangely. This is because he is infected by the ice spores.
- Shout-Out: Jo says Zane is acting like The Thing (1982).
- Spotting the Thread: Jack notices that the coffee Zane just tried to drink is frozen solid, leading he and Jo to find Zane passed out in the corridor. Later, he realises why Zane was infected but not Taggart: Zane was wearing high-tech thermal wear by GD, which acted as fertiliser for the fungus, while Taggart was wearing animal skins.
- Tempting Fate:
- Reassuring Allison about leaving her in charge of Eureka, Tess tells her, "I have everything under control!"
- Later, she says the ice forming around the core sample isn't a problem, right before it spreads out to her office.
- Working with the Ex: Taggart is back in town. He and Jo work together well, despite some awkwardness, and he appears to wish her and Zane well.
