Recap / Elena Of Avalor S 2 E 28 The Return Of El Capitan

Go To

Elena's family is spending this Dia de los Muertos in Nueva Vista, and this year, Abuelo (AKA El Capitan) is making an altar for two friends he lost when he was young. Thanks to Elena's magic, she's able to see her abuelo's two friends, who want to complete a mission they couldn't complete before their ship sank.

Tropes:

  • A Day in the Limelight: Abuelo gets his chance to shine.
  • Broken Aesop: The lesson Elena is supposed to learn is not to treat someone like they're weak just because they're old, but her reactions to Abuelo's actions are entirely reasonable. If a man in his 60s tried to dive down to a sunken ship to retrieve a map, anyone would be concerned about them drowning. It also made no sense for him to do it himself, since Elena had the milagra that allowed her to breathe underwater.
  • Code Name: We never learn the real names of Abuelo's friends, just their code names: El Guerrero ("the fighter") and El Místico ("the mystic"). Abuelo's code name is El Capitán ("the captain"), and Elena gets one after the events of the episode, La Mágica ("the magical one").
  • Continuity Nod: Elena's scepter is still prone to failure after getting blasted by Shuriki's dark magic in "Song of the Sirenas".
  • Cool Old Guy: Abuelo shows that he can be quite spry when the situation demands.
  • It's All My Fault: Even after many years, Abuelo still blames himself for the deaths of his friends. As it turns out, it actually wasn't his fault, since the marcoco capsized his ship.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Elena's attempt to help Abuelo retrieve the map at the shipwreck almost makes him lose the map, and wakes up the marcoco.
