Recap / Ed Edd N Eddy S 2 E 26 Cry Ed

Go To

"Cry Ed" is the 26th episode of Season 2 of Ed, Edd n Eddy. Eddy is entertaining the cul-de-sac kids with stunts, but the fun soon stops when Jimmy gets injured (by a clothspin of all things) and his friends rush to help him. Jealous, Eddy decides to fake an injury himself to win back their attention, much to Edd's exasperation.

Tropes:

  • Angry Guard Dog: Jimmy is initially completely safe inside the Playsafe Suit Double D improvised for him, but he unfortunately lands right into a backyard with an angry dog, which chews open a hole in the suit, sending Jimmy helplessly flying away.
  • Attention Whore: The plot kicks into action because Eddy is jealous of Jimmy's injuries stealing attention away from him that he makes every attempt to get the kids attention back to him with some being really desperate.
  • Bad "Bad Acting": When Eddy is faking an injury to gain attention, Double D plays along with it as an actor, but he clearly phones in his performance.
  • Big Ball of Violence: The ending has Eddy in one in the hole he knocked Kevin and Rolf into as they beat him up. This ends up being to Eddy's delight as he still wants the kids to see him get hurt and take attention away from Jimmy. As he orders Double D to get the kids to see him in pain (and he begrudgingly walks off while mumbling about being bossed around all day), the normally loyal Ed just watches over the carnage with a big smirk on his face.
  • Breaking the Fourth Wall: Edd pants that he must have lost ten pounds this season with all the running he's been doing.
  • Butt-Monkey: Jimmy breaks his foot by getting a tiny clothespin dropped on it, gets crushed under a tree (implied to have been knocked down by a squirrel), and then gets sent flying off helplessly when a dog chews a hole into his Playsafe Suit.
  • Department of Redundancy Department: Rolf before Eddy crashes onto him and Kevin in his safety suit: "Rolf's eyes fool the brain of Rolf!"
  • Facepalm: Double D displays one as Ed explains Eddy's ridiculously inaccurate anatomy and "injuries" to the neighborhood children.
  • Here We Go Again!: Just when the kids think Jimmy is safe from injury inside Double D's Playsafe suit, he falls right into a backyard with a dog, tearing a hole in it and sending him flying away, with the kids tailing right behind.
  • Hope Spot: Double D gives Jimmy a "Playsafe Suit" in the hopes of keeping him safe and deterring Eddy's ridiculous attention-seeking game. Unfortunately, this does not deter Eddy, since now he just tries to prove he can make a suit that's safer than Jimmy's for attention. While it did briefly keep him safe, he ends up having the suit ruined when an Angry Guard Dog bites through the suit and launches him through the air like a rapidly deflating balloon.
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall: Edd alludes to the series' focus on slapstick comedy to explain why Jimmy's injury drew so much attention.
Edd: Humans are naturally attracted to the blunders, bruises, and over-the-top cartoon antics of others.
  • Made of Plasticine: Zigzagged; Jimmy gets his foot broken by a clothespin falling onto it. But later on, he gets completely crushed under a tree and eventually recovers despite some more injuries.
  • Made of Iron: Jimmy gets crushed under a large tree and survives. Eddy gets an entire house dropped on him, courtesy of Ed, and comes out intact.
    • Subverted with Eddy's "Better Than Jimmy's Playsafe Suit". At first it seems impenetrable, but Rolf is able to split it open by simply hitting a spot on it that had shoddy spot welding.
  • Minor Injury Overreaction: When the clothespin bounces onto Jimmy's foot. It could also be that he's just THAT weak.
  • Münchausen Syndrome: Eddy throughout the episode fakes injury in order to garner sympathy.
  • No-Holds-Barred Beatdown: Eddy receives a well-deserved one from Rolf and Kevin at the end of the episode for taking his need to outdo Jimmy for attention too far.
  • Oh, Crap!:
    • Eddy and Double D have this reaction when they see Ed lifting a house in front of them, about to drop it down on Eddy. Double D high tails it, while Eddy gets crushed.
    • Eddy is initially cocky that his improvised Playsafe Suit will protect him from Kevin and Rolf, but when Rolf quickly breaks open the suit, Eddy whimpers like a puppy dog as they prepare to thrash him.
  • Screwball Squirrel: While Jimmy is resting on a lawn chair, he notices a squirrel off screen. The next time we see Jimmy, he's crushed under a tree, and it's implied the squirrel somehow knocked it down onto him.
  • Shatterpoint Tap: Eddy is confident that his Playsafe Suit will protect him from Kevin and Rolf's beating, but Rolf knows how to tap the potbellied stove Eddy is wearing so that it splits neatly in two, leaving poor Eddy exposed.
  • Super-Strength: Ed lifts an entire house off its foundation and drops it onto Eddy so he can really be injured.
  • Talk to the Fist: A preemptive variation from Kevin to Eddy:
Well, whadd'ya know? Canned dork. Allow me to introduce you to my knuckles...
  • What Were You Thinking?: Double D asks Ed this after the latter drops an entire house on top of Eddy. Ed's response?:
    "Absolutely nothing, Double D!"
