Recap / Duck Dodgers S 1 E 12

Go To

"The Queen is Wild"

Tyrah'nee kidnaps the Eager Young Space Cadet as bait to lure Dodgers into a trap, wanting to take revenge on him for dumping her on their wedding day.

This episode contains examples of the following tropes:

  • Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking: Tyrah'nee makes a serious-to-not-so-serious list of her grievances against Dodgers for dropping her like a hot potato on the day they were supposed to marry:
Let me tell you a story, Commander. A story of betrayal and lies, and a woman's heart torn asunder. Let me tell you of a consort's throne left vacant, a bridal chamber left barren, and a reception hall left filled with them big shrimp.
  • I Have Your Wife: The Martian Queen kidnaps Cadet so that Dodgers will come to her.
  • Mythology Gag: The ending shows the spurned Martian Queen shooting up mechanical dummies that look like Duck Dodgers, and dropping the line: "So they're mechanical!" (with a connotation of "So what?") This is a reference to the end of the Bugs Bunny episode Hair-Raising Hare, where Bugs says this about a mechanical female rabbit before chasing it for more kisses.
  • Not So Above It All: Just the fact Tyrah'nee of all people said "them big shrimp" with a straight face.
  • Ring-Ring-CRUNCH!: The Eager Young Space Cadet gave Duck Dodgers a talking "Happy Cat" alarm clock for Christmas. The clock became a Clingy Macguffin... in fact, a rather hostile one voiced by Mako Iwamatsu.
  • Shout-Out: The nebula battle has moments taken shot-for-shot from Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.
  • Twitchy Eye: An annoying "Happy Cat" alarm clock keeps disrupting Dodgers' sleep. After he's apparently "killed" it and it starts up again, he develops an eye tic and goes after it in earnest.
  • Woman Scorned: The Martian Queen initially didn't take Dodgers dumping her very well.
Tyrah'nee: But now, I will have my richly deserved revenge. I will humiliate Duck Dodgers, as he humiliated me. And when the wretch begs for mercy, he will receive naught but the heel of my foot, and my laugh of bitter contempt.

"Back to the Academy"

Dodgers has to return to the Academy for additional training in order to keep his post as a Protectorate Captain.

This episode contains examples of the following tropes:

  • Gender-Blender Name: A Drill Sergeant Nasty named Emily Dickinson keeps dogging Dodgers as he attempts to complete his training. In the 24½th Century, there's apparently no such thing as gender-specific naming... which doesn't stop Dodgers from laughing hysterically at the guy.
